Traveler's Paradise

by hunterV

As you see from the map, the province is divided into different regions that are often called after the natural names such as Salzkammergut where we stayed, Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen, Sauwald, etc. We stayed in the south-west of the province and managed to see quite a lot there including our trip to the border with Kärnten to see the Dachtein Caves and Mount Krippenstein.Linz is the province’s capital and main city. I would say all towns and cities are so to say capitals of their own small areas. This province is rich in pure water: rivers, lakes and ponds; mountains such as Hell Mountains, Dead Mountains, Hausruck and others. I wonder why they called the mountain range “Hell Mountains”. I forgot to ask. I should ask the locals next time when I visit the area! Our stay in Weyregg at Lake Attersee and excursions about the province.More information at:Oberösterreich Touristik GmbHAm Hartmazrgut...

Stalzerhaus - and a Concert by Franz Schubert

by globetrott

The yellow house on the right was owned by the family of Franz Schubert's big but unfulfilled love...Her father was against the marriage...But Schubert was often a guest of the family and he played the piano on the 1st floor.I once met someone, who told me that he still keeps letters from his grand-grand-grand-mother, and they are the loveletters written by Franz Schubert to the young lady in Stalzerhof... So you may think of Franz Schubert, when walking by this yellow building. You may as well get inside that big entrance-gate, WITHOUT having to fear to be arrested , and will see one of the beautiful innercourts of town !

Parish-church interior

Have a look for the great gothic ornamental-windows Something very rare to be found in any gothic church :Here you will see a clock on the ceiling of the church - so people could have a look, how late it is during the mess service

Parish Church - Stadtpfarrkirche

by globetrott

This church was started to be built in 1443 by Hans Puchsbaum - who was also the architect of Vienna's St.Stephens / Stephansdom. The square around the church is called " Brucknerplatz " - as Anton Bruckner , famous austrian Composer and organist was often here as a guest

Bummerlhaus

by globetrott

Bummerlhaus got its name by a small golden lion that is on the guild-sign of the house. It is the eldest house on the main-square and the fassade is still made of sandstone There is a bank inside today - and every evening you might have a look from outside when the wooden ceiling on the 1st floor is lighted and you may see the great woodcarvings of the ceiling !

Sternhaus - ornaments

by globetrott

The fact that no house was destroyed during the war might be one of the reasons, why Steyr did not get any modern buildings on Hauptplatz lateron all fassades on the main square are unique and vary in many ways

Sternhaus - details

by globetrott

The fassade of Sternhaus is very colorful and got a great restauration Steyr was lucky during WW II - there was almost no damage after the bombing of the town - due to a fog on that very day, the bombs went down somewhere elseThanks a lot !!!

a modernized gothic house

by globetrott

This is one of the houses with a fassade of a later century. Steyr got rich and wealthy in the times after 1500 AD, when ONLY the hammerworks of Steyr had the priviledge to use the Iron of the ErzbergIn later centuries business went down a bit and so the owners of the houses had only a bit of money to "modernize" their houses into Baroque style - but the LEFT the main part of the houses and changed only the fassades

Tip Photo
Stadtplatz - town square

by globetrott

The Hauptplatz of Steyr consists ONLY of houses at least 250 years old. Most of them are gothic and roman - even if they got a baroque fassade lateron Take a walk on Hauptplatz and have a look for the great and unique fassades of all decades
