Gosausee is a lake at the mountain Dachstein. Actually, there are three different lakes called like that, "Vorderer Gosausee", "Gosaulacke" and "Hinterer Gosausee". They have similar names, but the only connection is that they are fed by the same mountain well.
The lake we visited is the "Vorderer Gosausee". As I wrote in the intro, it is very beautiful. We walked around a little and enjoyed the scenery before continuing to Hallstatt.
The lake is only 52squ.m. wide and thus it is very small compared to Wolfgangsee or Hallstätter See. Together with the other two lakes it is part of a nature protection area.

"Vorderer Gosausee" is located directly at the road which makes it great for a short stop. There is also an info centre where you can visit the restrooms, buy some souvenirs or buy a snack.

The drive from Salzburg to Gosausee is a little more than one hour. It is a beautiful drive through the Salzkammergut landscape with its green meadows and willoes and small lakes and woods. You can see small alpine villages and farms and enjoy the mountain scenery. When doing a trip to a town or city like Salzburg I really like to get out of it for one day and see what the area is like outside!

Dachstein Glacier

Dachstein is the second most tallest mountain in the Northern Alps, with a dozen peaks over 2500 meters. It stretches over three regions of Austria (Upper Austria, Styria and Salzburg).

Glaciers in the Northern Alps are uncommon, but the three glaciers on Dachstein are the biggest. There is the Hallstatt Glacier, the Schladming Glacier and the Gossau Glacier - that is seen here from the Gosau lake.

Though the glaciers have been for million of years, they are regressing now with more than 20 meters per year and might as well disappear in a few hundred years.

It should not take more than an hour, the view of the Dachstein Glacier mirrored in the lake is gorgeous, the water green and you have along the path some points showing what men did with water over time to benefit from its energy.

A very nice walk to do is going up by cable car to the Zwieselalm and walk down to the Vordere Gosausee. It takes somewhere about two hours to get down again.

Great views accompany you, when walking down on the Dachstein glacier, te lake and surrounding mountians.

Meet up with some friendly Austrian cows! A wonderful day out!

Vordere Gosausee

Another great and relative easy walk is to go around the entire Vordere Gosausee. Great views around you as well as reflecting in the lake!
