Dachterrasse - I am not sure wether this is the name of that restaurant, but it is written there in large letters, maybe only to indicate that the HAVE a great terrace on top. This terrace certainly has the best view of the river Danube and all of the many ships passing by, the food is simple, tasty and they have reasonable prices and you will see many cyclers there relaxing and having a meal.
Their terrace in front has ordinary tables and the one in the back has cheaper benches and tables like in a beer-garden (see my 3rd picture) !
Favorite Dish: I had a Wienerschnitzel with Potatoe-Salad and it tasted fine and costed less than 8 euros in 2006.

Konditorei Schörgi is a very popular confectionary (Konditorei) just opposite of the ship-landing-station and along the main road through the village. They also have a large terrace facing the river Danube and it is the first icecream-parlor that all of the hungry and exhausted cyclers will see when getting to Grein. So they are mostly quite busy and for the icecream you might have to wait a bit, but it is really worth it !
Favorite Dish: Taste their cakes, Greintorte was fine and you might get it only there, they also have nice snacks and small dishes for lunch and dinner, the only hanikap might be the rather small tables, when you order a meal.
Open daily without Tuesday : 10am - midnight

Grein an der Donau is a lovely village not very far from Melk, just about 30km upstream on the river Danube !

I'm not sure why the rivercruise put ashore here. Probably because we had several hours to kill before our scheduled tour of the Melk Abbey. At any rate, it was a Monday morning and nothing was open...

This is one of my fondest memories in Austria, we were biking along the Danube and it started POURING really hard. We had to seek refuge from the rain somewhere, so we ducked into a castle that was on...
