Just outside of the town proper is a road leading up to the 3 star hotel Hochberghaus 1200 meters (3600 feet up) on the top of the mountain.
There are multiple paths leading off into the woods in various directions.
The road is well maintained but I came across some trees that collapsed into the road at the 1/4 way point.
At the 1000 meter point there is a large stone marker saying "Jetzt sag du" (Now you say).
At the top of the hill after many switchbacks is the Hochberghaus which is a 3 star hotel, restaurant/chalet. There is a ski hill next to the building and unfortunatly the building and the ski hill were closed when I was there.
The views of the Grunau im Amtal valley are outstanding from the porch area.
Pack a lunch and sit and enjoy your efforts because they really do pay off in the end.

It's 42 kilometers (roughly 26 miles) round trip from Grunau im Amtal.
It only took me 3 1/2 hours to do the round trip and I'm not a professional biker.
The journey is fun and relativly easy. There are a couple hills that got a little steep but I never had to get off my bike to climb a hill.
There is a biking path past one hill on the left. The only problem I had with the path is that the soil was a little loose and there were occasionally large tree branches/small trees blocking the path that I needed to carry the bike over. The scenery is great if you go on the path or stay on the side of the road. The bike path ends after a few miles so you have to go back on the road anyways.
When you get to the Almsee, there is a restaurant to eat at, I never did since I had sandwiches. The restaurant seems very popular and there was a bit of traffic heading towards it on the road. There is a path heading past the parking lot furthest from the restaurant but I did not check it out. I believe it is foot traffic only.
The views of the lake are outstanding and relaxing. It is definitly worth the bike ride in both directions.

Wildpark Grünau is a very special zoo. It is home to many of Austria's native wildlife species. Some animals, like deer and geese are allowed to roam the park freely. What makes this park even more unique is that it is beautifully designed to fit into the mountains in which it is located. The trout pond within the park is filled by the mineral rich river Alm which runs right behind the park. It is a great place to get acquainted with creatures that one rarely sees in the European wild. These animals include Eagles, wolves, bears, ibex, deer, trout, ibises, owls, fox, Equis equis (old horse), and many more. Take a trip you won't soon forget.
