Favorite thing: As we only had limited time and travelled without a car, we decided to take a guided daytrip from Salzburg to the Salzkammergut, visiting Lake Gosau, Hallstatt, St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen. Yes, I can already hear some people scream out loud - but seriously, I sometimes find a tour a very good option when you travel on public transport and want to see something in a short time in a convenient way.
We booked our trip with Salzburg Sightseeing Tours. They belong to the Grayline Group which I kind of dislike because I rather want to support local operators, but we could not find any other tour to Hallstatt.
The tour was really great: The group only consisted of a very nice Chinese couple and us, and the guide was from England, had lived in Salzburg for some years and spoke both English and German, so she explained everything in both languages. She was very knowledgeable of the area and gave us many hints on what to see and do, where to go for a good view, and so on. She answered all our questions and it was just a very nice trip.
It was also not rushed, we had a lot of time in every place (which also was due to our small group size), and we could wander around on our own in every place which I liked very much. We got the information in the car while on the way, and then could explore the places in our own leisure and pace.
Thus, I can really recommend this tour if you are looking for a guided daytrip to Hallstatt!

Favorite thing: Always leave something for the next visit! These are the things I didn't do in Hallstatt so far and that I want to do when going back:
Hallstatt Museum - displays Hallstatt's history, especially the Hallstatt period
Rudolfsturm - a tower in the mountains with a fantastic view, you can go up by funicular
Ferry Tour - to go on Hallstätter See by boat must be wonderful!

Favorite thing: While having a stroll around Hallstatt, You’ll notice some small shrines along the roadside and Hilltops. I guess it must be a place of worship? Judging from the statues inside. Kindly correct us if you know what actually it is.
Fondest memory: The sceneries, The Lake & the weather!!!

Favorite thing: On the way back from Dachstein we notice that there’s a park nearby Hallstatt just before the tunnel. You can swim near the park during your leisure time and also unwind there. There’s a small store selling some quick bites and also drinks too. The park is also a great place for photography!

Favorite thing: Another small museum on top of the mountain where you could see some old findings on the way to the salt mine. There, You can find Hallstatt necropolis. You’ll have to see for yourself the interesting things that you can take a picture of!

Favorite thing: There is a museum nearby and you could visit it. I like the place where there’s a big ground for Chess…maybe it’s much easier to play the chess in winter because it will glide easily.

Favorite thing: As you know, I like animals and I saw a number of stray cats in Hallstatt wandering about town. I'm surprised at how fat they were, the people of Hallstatt must love them to feed them till they're this big and quite friendly. I didn't meet one that tried to scratch or bite me.

Favorite thing: It is not allowed to enter the centre of Hallstatt by car, it is a pedestrian zone. There are parking lots outside the centre where you can park your car. At the first parking lot on the right when coming from Bad Aussee it is possible to park for free, but it is maybe a 15-20 min walk away from the centre. At the other, more central parking lots, they charge about EUR 4,50 - for this fee you can leave your car there the whole day. If you come after 2 p.m. you pay only EUR 3. There is a short term parking zone a bit closer to the centre as well (right in front where the ships depart), but there is only space for about 4 or 5 cars and you have to leave after 30 minutes.
