Der Mann im Salz

In 1734 a dead body - rather well conservated was found inside one of the mines and finally buried on the graveyard in Hallstatt.
The people of that time thought it would be just a person, who died 100 years ago.
In fact it was a man who had died in the stone-age and later a lot more of such persons were found and carfully taken out of the mines by Johann Georg Ramsauer who invested most of his money to unbury these corpses of the stone-ages.

Soon the emperor heared about it and lots of rich and noble people, who were on vacation in nearby Bad Ischl came to see the excarvations.

Today you may see the "Mann im Salz" - a sculpture at the entrance of Hallstatt.

panorama from Schafberg - 35 km west of Hallstatt

Schafberg and the lovely steam-train climbing uphill since more than 100 years might be a good reason to make a stop-over in St.Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee.
On top of Schafberg you will have a perfect panorama including 7 lakes and lots of great mountains.

Just click on my picture in order to see the full picture, that is a 360 degree panorama.
I am sorry for the bad quality, but at least you get an idea, what it looks like...

My link below will connect you to the web-page of the hotel on top of Schafberg !

Lovely local garden

This is not about a specific place; it is just a recommendation that you wander around the town (this works anywhere) and see what interests you. You might even meet someone and make a new friend. I am a gardener, so very much enjoyed finding a lovely one at the house in the photo.

You can go to MOUNTAIN CAVES with ice. But i offer it, if you never been to such places - the other way you'll see nothing new .

Q:  During May/June, is it best to visit morning or afternoon ,to have sunlight on the village?

GrumpyDiver profile photo

A: If I recall correctly, Hallstadt is on the west side of the lake, so morning light is what you are after.
