    Just wander

    Lovely local garden

This is not about a specific place; it is just a recommendation that you wander around the town (this works anywhere) and see what interests you. You might even meet someone and make a new friend. I am a gardener, so very much enjoyed finding a lovely one at the house in the photo.

    In the Ice Caves
    1 more image

If you have time from relaxing in Hallstatt, try to make a visit to the famous ice caves in the Salzkammergut region. The Giant Ice Caves is one of the largest caves in the world and the ice formation is the result of air circulation in the caves where in the winter the air moves into the caves and in summer out of the cave.

You can take a hour hour to one half hour guided tour in the caves which will bring you to some highlights of the caves e.g the Grals Castle and the Ice Chapel.

Guides will cost Euro 8.80 to Euro 13.50 Euro. To get to the caves, you can take a cable car ride to Dachstein cable car middle station at Obertraun. Then, a further 15 min uphill walk from the station to the caves.

    Gmunden

    Gmunden & Lake Traunsee

Since I made Hallstatt as my base in Upper Austria, I visited the nearby town of Gmunden which is larger and more commercial than Hallstatt. The picturesque town was built at the edge of Lake Traunsee on the Traun River and is surrounded by high mountains.

The town is popular for Austria's "wellness" or health resorts and is frequented by many, especially during summer time. There are also a number of lake front restaurants & hotels to come to. Their famous export is the "Gmunden Keramik" pottery which comes is bright colors and whimsical designs.

Almsee is a lake south of the town of Grünau im Almtal in Upper Austria which has stunning views of mountains and of course the lake. This is a popular place to hike and enjoy the fresh air. There is a lakehouse in the area should you want to stay overnight or have something to eat.

    Beautiful lake in St Wolfgang

    St Wolfgang from the lake

St Wolfgang is a popular destination for not only Austrians and visitors alike especially during the holidays & weekends. The town was built on the edge of Lake Wolfgangsee, where you can go on boat rides or sail. Once again, this town is bigger than Hallstatt and is more commercial whereby you will find many restaurants, souvenir shops & hotels. You can either walk along its historical streets or choose to go on a horse-drawn carriage around town.

The town has many pretty buildings, one of them is Im weißen Rößl or 'The White Horse Inn', where a musical comedy is based on. From the lake, you can have a fantastic view of the town and the 1000 year old church.
