Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Unfortunately, I was freezing like hell during my whole visit in Hallstatt. It was raining very strongly and I only had a thin jumper - usually sufficient for a summer day, even in rain. But as Hallstatt is located exactly in the shade between the mountains, it gets really, really cold when it is not a warm day. I really wished I had had a warmer jacket and a scarf with me.

It's cold up there

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: If you visit the Ice Caves of Dachstein near Hallstatt, you should bring something warm to wear, like a sweater, hat & jeans. You may be tempted to just dress lightly in summer but once you're in the caves, the temperature can go as low as 0 deg C, plus high humidity. It will be cold in there!! Also, wear good walking shoes because you will take a walk uphill to the caves so forget the heels

Photo Equipment: Hallstatt is one of the most picturesque towns in Europe and if I were in charge of the Austrian tourist board, I'd hire the best photographer in the country to capture Hallstatt's beauty and put the photos on every brochure printed. Be sure to bring all your camera equipment and allow enough time to capture the town in the ideal light of early morning or dusk.
