Rent a pedal-boat and you are able to take the best pics of Hallstatt seen from the lake-side.
The bigger cruise-ships will mostly too fast anyway for photographers, but with a pedal- or electric-boat you are able to approach all the interesting places on your own.
There are plenty of boat-hires between the centre and the south-end of the promenade.

When coming to Hallstatt from the north you will pass through a tunnel and will have a possibility to leave it through a side-gate in order to get to this parking above the town of Hallstatt.
THIS is certainly the best parking in Hallstatt!
simply because it is free of charge and you will have just about 200 meters to walk down a few steps to the church and the famous cemetery.
Unfortunately this parking has only about 30 places and getting into the tunnel again is sometimes a bit dangerous and confusing.
The parking is also a perfect place for a first panorama-view.

and when you click on my pic you will see the rest of the landscape has great sunshine, while Hallstatt is in the shade already.

In case that you have a small car, not wider than 2,2 meters and not higher than 2,25 meters you may park your car against a fee in the very centre, next to the ship-station and close to the protestant church.
Besides this small square there is not a single parking, except a few private parkings of some hotels.
In case that the parking is full - that will happen especially at the weekends and in the summer-season - you have to drive back all the way through the village and park outside.
The best parking is the shown and explained on my next tip !

Cruising on Hallstätter See / lake Hallstatt is certainly a great idea on a sunny day, as the village certainly looks best from the lake.
Just have a look for the gigantic basement that was necessary in order to build the catholic church and its small cemetery into the mountain.
On my link below you may have a look for the schedules , prices etc. of these cruises, that you may as well start and end at the trainstation.

The train stops at the opposite shore of Lake Hallstatt / Hallstätter See and you will have to take the ship to get into the village.
The distance is just a few hundred meters, as you may see on my picture - and when you click on it you might even see the train in the background.
Better check HERE for the timetable of trains well in advance, as trains run regularily but not really very often and especially later in the evening it might be a problem to catch a train.

The train to Hallstatt stops across the lake from the town but you can catch the ferry for about 2 Euros. I think it meets most trains and runs until about 18:30 but for your return check the schedule. The TI or hotel should be able to help and as I recall there is a schedule posted near the dock. What a great way to start your visit to this small but superb town!

Trying to drive to Hallstatt is difficult, and parking here is next to impossible, so taking the train would be the lessor of the two evils.....
The train line to Hallstatt is out on a spur off the main lines. Once you disembark from the train, your out all by your lonesome on the other side of the lake from town... (A ferry will be hopefully there waiting for train passengers when you arrive...)

... and cable cars, that go half way to the STARS... when I come home to you... SAN FRANCI... Oh sorry, got carried way... wrong page...
Anyway if you want to save time and some wear on your legs, you can ride up to Salzbergwerke in the cable car..

I suppose the easiest way to get to Halstatt is by train. However, when you arrive, you will find that the train station is all by itself on the far side of the lake from town.
Fortunately, it seems that they sync the lake ferries with the arriving trains, so there should be one there waiting for you when you arrive. If not, I'm told that you can ride the train up to the next stop, and then use whatever means available to get back to Halstatt. (Walk, hitch, crawl.... )

See the town from every angle!
Q: During May/June, is it best to visit morning or afternoon ,to have sunlight on the village?

A: If I recall correctly, Hallstadt is on the west side of the lake, so morning light is what you are after.
