We arrived at Hallstatt by Car. We found the best thing to do, was to park the car near the Salt Miner statue which happens to be at the entrance to Hallstatt.
From here, the walk into and through the town is lovely. The streets are very narrow, probably only wide enough to take one Car.

Only small cars may drive through the village of Hallstatt - all the others have to take the rather newly built tunnel.
The main problem is that you will not be aware of this narrow place - close to the Protestant church with the steep tower - you will just see it, when you have entered the street already and have to drive backwards carefully and slowly, as also all the pedestrians use the same street.
The most narrow place is 2,2 m wide and 2,25 m high. !!

Edelweiss is something special, maybe the best known alpine flower world-wide, as the main theme of "Sound of Music" is "Edelweiss, Edelweiss..."
Picking of Edelweiss is a crime and will cost you a lot of money, when they catch you - NO matter if they catch you on the spot or at the airport !!
In Hallstatt they seem to have the real ones, been taken down from the mountains with a big part of the surrounding soil.
Edelweiss-seeds, that you are able to buy at some of the shops will NOT give you such plants, but look different.

The only danger here is wanting to give up the rest of your trip and spending your time here.

There are salt everywhere.
Q: During May/June, is it best to visit morning or afternoon ,to have sunlight on the village?

A: If I recall correctly, Hallstadt is on the west side of the lake, so morning light is what you are after.
