Hauptplatz – All kinds of things to happen.

For hundreds of years the Main Square of Linz has been a busy place where all kinds of things happen. Once it was the market place, today it is cultural events, the flea market of curiosities, the Christmas Market and the many sidewalk cafes in the summer that draw people here. We were lucky to enjoy a small fair. Of course this was a huge delight for Iris and Sam, who entered some attractions.

Before we entered the Alt Stadt (Old Town) we walked our way along some impressive buildings surrounding the Hauptplatz. First of all the Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall) in which even today still seats the Mayor. We also had a look at the beautiful baroque Stadtpfarrkirche (Linz Parish Church) and at the closeby Niebelungenbrücke which crosses the Danube (river Donau). And do remember: whenever you visit Linz and you walk around, the spacious, baroque main square with its lively hustle and bustle is never far away.

Without a doubt is the Hauptplatz the busy centre of the town and a true tourist trap. But is this a good reason to avoid it and not visit it? No, not at all. You can also put this main square in the tip section "Must see"! And I can also tell you why :) First of all we noticed right at the middle of the square the Dreifaltigkeitssäule (Dreifaltigkeit means Holy Trinity) built in 1723. Maybe it’s better known as the Pestsäule (plaque column), because it was built to remember the people who died during the plague epidemics.

We had a nice drink right at the square (Kaffee Glockenspiel) and during our sit on the terrace we was lots of historical buildings, impressive churches and the well preserved houses of rich merchants. I read in my travel book that the Hauptplatz is one of the largest Medieval main squares in Central Europe. At least it is Austria’s largest town square and we enjoyed being there and feel the vibe of this magnificent square which was laid out in 1260.

On a heavily cloudy day I decided to go the city of Linz, and I was not sorry for that. Funny thing was that at the moment we entered the city the sky opened up and the sun did arrive! The reason why I wanted to go to Linz was rather simple, because it’s the third largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal province of Upper Austria. Besides that it is situated by the Danube (Donau) river, so there had to be something to explore of interest. We learned that the tourist slogan of the city is "In Linz beginnt's" ("It starts in Linz"). Linz truly is an innovative, contemporary city where culture, architecture, nature and science coexist as a satisfying whole. The European Cultural Capital of 2009 has modern cultural buildings sit harmoniously with baroque facades.

We started our exploration tour on the famous Hauptplatz (main square of Linz) on which all kinds of beautiful historical buildings are situated. The Hauptplatz is the natural centre of the city of Linz: a stage for various minor and major events, a reference point, a meeting place and the starting point or destination for walkers who want to discover the city. Historically speaking, the square began to operate in a shape and size similar to what we see today in the early years of the 13th century.
