 | Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut General Tips | Tips 1 - 10 of 16 | | The town of Sankt Wolfgang has a vibrant vitality that draws you to it. Because of this liveliness and its connection with nature, love seems to be amplified in Sankt Wolfgang. I'm not sure how to explain what I mean, perhaps there is no way to describe it. The best I can recommend is to bring your significant other to this town, gaze out into the lake, and hold each other. You'll see what I mean when you get there.
Elisabeth was busy taking a picture of the Wolfgangsee and I stood behind her seeing her silhouette form an everlasting impint in my mind. I'm so glad I took this picture, but it wasn't necessary as this moment will always be in my mind. Sankt Wolfgang is truly a romantic place. Leave a Comment

Have a look for some interesting facts of the history of St. Wolfgang, that is written on this lovely sign-post next to the church : St.Wolfgang was given as a donation from the german king Ludwig to the monastery of Mondsee in the year 976 x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
The village of St.Wolfgang soon became an important place for pilgrimage in the 14th-16th century. In 1873 the Schafbergbahn was built and in 1930 the operetta made St.Wolfgang and the "Weisses Roessel" famous all over Europe. Leave a Comment

St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut Salzkammergut is the name of the region east of the town Salzburg, and it is partly situated in Bundesland Salzburg, partly in Oberoesterreich. The typical landscape of Salzkammergut is consisting only of high mountains around several lakes and all of that region is also rich of SALT ( = Salz ). x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
In former times Salt-barons got really rich by selling their salt to places all over Europe. Today many of these salt-mines are not producing salt anymore, but you may go into the mountain by guided tours, and see how these mines once worked. The funniest part of these mines are in my memory the wooden slides, where you can slide down the mines during the guided tours. Leave a Comment

Hotel Weisses R?ssl offers a terrace directely on the lake of St. Wolfgang Weisses R?ssl means WHITE HORSE Prices are pretty high in St. Wolfgang anyway, and in Weisses R?ssl they are even a bit higher... BUT everyone wants to go there anyway, and most of the tourists also think of a certain melody : Im weissen R?ssel am Wolfgangsee, da steht das Gl?ck vor der T?r, und ruft Dir zu : "Guten Morgen, im Weissen R?ssl am See" (I tried to translate, but ALL of the certain poetry would be lost...) Maybe someone has an apropriate way to translate ?? Leave a Comment

Hotel Weisses Rössl is the major attraction for St. Wolfgang, as so plenty of people will remember the great and popular songs of the operetta. --------------------------------------------------------------
Every spot in town is filled with hotels, restaurants and souvenirshops. You will have to leave your car outside and walk through town. On my pic is the famous hotel and it's great terrace on the left ! Leave a Comment

It was the usual way for rich people to explore the mountains in the Salzkammergut to hire people to carry them up the mountains in a chair like the one on my picture: 2 strong sticks were put into the fixtures and the tourists did not have to climb up the mountains themselves. "Sesselträger" was a real profession and a good income untill the construction of the Schafbergbahn a bit more than 110 years ago. -------------------------------------------------------------------------
This chair is an exhibit in Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl Leave a Comment

The village of St. Wolfgang is indeed "nestled" at the foot of a mountain. (I like that word "nestled".) Leave a Comment

This is the view of the Wolfgangsee when you are standing on the porch of the church and looking out over the lake. Leave a Comment

I've read that St. Wolfgang can get overwhelmed by tourist hordes in the peak seasons, but if you visit during the off or fringe seasons, you're likely to find a very easy-going place in beautiful, natural surroundings. I came here with no specific plans, but had intended to stay only for one night and then to move on to another lake area town. However, I enjoyed the atmosphere here so much that I decided to make it my base and spend an extra night. Leave a Comment

On the eastern edge of town near the outdoor parking lot, you'll find this tourist information center that has plenty of helpful brochures and an English speaking staff to assist with planning your stay in St. Wolfgang or other adventures throughout the lake region. Leave a Comment
