    Wonderfully Romantic Sankt Wolfgang

by seamandrew Updated Sep 20, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Elisabeth's silhouette makes for a great memory.

Favorite thing: The town of Sankt Wolfgang has a vibrant vitality that draws you to it. Because of this liveliness and its connection with nature, love seems to be amplified in Sankt Wolfgang. I'm not sure how to explain what I mean, perhaps there is no way to describe it. The best I can recommend is to bring your significant other to this town, gaze out into the lake, and hold each other. You'll see what I mean when you get there.

Fondest memory: Elisabeth was busy taking a picture of the Wolfgangsee and I stood behind her seeing her silhouette form an everlasting impint in my mind. I'm so glad I took this picture, but it wasn't necessary as this moment will always be in my mind. Sankt Wolfgang is truly a romantic place.

The park near to St Wolfgang, Austria

Favorite thing: There is a very nice and big park with lots of benches located at the western side of St Wolfgang along the main road, just across the Schafberg train station. The views of the Wolfgangsee lake and mountains here are fantastic. This is perhaps the best place to have a good view of St Gilgen town together with the lake and boats (see photos).

    Warm summer and colourful flowers

Flowers at summer, St Wolfgang, Austria

Favorite thing: Summer is perhaps the best time to visit St Wolfgang because of the warm weather, greenery and beautiful flowers. The months of July and August will be very crowded because of peak summer season. To avoid too many crowds, the months of May-June and Sep-Oct would be good options.

    Swans and ducks

Favorite thing: While you are at St Wolfgang, you will be able to see swans and many ducks swimming in the beautiful Wolfgangsee lake. These add to the relaxing and laid back atmosphere of the town and surrounding landscape. A visit to St Wolfgang and surrounding is a good getaway from big cities such as Vienna and Salzburg.

    The new fountain

Favorite thing: This interesting fountain is a new addition to the town, it was not there in 2007 when I first visited Sankt Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee.

The giant stone ball is actually moving on the water and you can change direction with your hand. The trick is how they managed the friction between the heavy stone ball and the one that it rotates onto. Beside the water it must be another thing to keep it from grinding stone on stone.

Check out the second picture for a closer detail of the fountain.

Relaxing on the benches by the lake

Benches by the Wolfgangsee lake, Austria
    3 more images

Favorite thing: There are many benches along the Wolfgangsee lake at St Wolfgang. When the weather is good and the sky is clear, it is one of the best feeling in the world to sit at these benches and admire the scenery, relax, chit-chat with your friends and loved ones.

My wife and I had a really enjoyable time here during our honeymoon in June 2007, just look at the photos and you know what I mean.

    Great hub

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: On the eastern edge of town near the outdoor parking lot, you'll find this tourist information center that has plenty of helpful brochures and an English speaking staff to assist with planning your stay in St. Wolfgang or other adventures throughout the lake region.

    Relaxing place

by acemj Updated Apr 17, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: I've read that St. Wolfgang can get overwhelmed by tourist hordes in the peak seasons, but if you visit during the off or fringe seasons, you're likely to find a very easy-going place in beautiful, natural surroundings. I came here with no specific plans, but had intended to stay only for one night and then to move on to another lake area town. However, I enjoyed the atmosphere here so much that I decided to make it my base and spend an extra night.

    Beautiful St. Wolfgang

by acemj Updated Apr 17, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The views of the lake, the mountain scenery and the quaintness of the village itself make St. Wolfgang a truly picturesque place. I would have to say that nearby Hallstatt is even more visually spectacular, but because it is better connected to the rest of the region, St. Wolfgang makes for a superior base for exploration. Most of the guidebooks will tell you that Bad Ischl is the best base and when it comes to rail and bus lines this is true, but I would go with St. Wolfgang anyday. It's a short bus ride to Bad Ischl and it's much more atmospheric.

On the high seas of the Salzkammergut

Favorite thing: The village of St. Wolfgang is indeed "nestled" at the foot of a mountain. (I like that word "nestled".)
