    Im Weißen Rössl am Wolfgangsee.

We had a coffeestop overhere, when I was a kid . Ofcourse Im Weißen Rössl.

Maybe you remember the famous song about it. 25 years later I came by on the boat on my way to St. Gilgen.

St. Wolfgang is very touristic mainly because of the song.

    History of St Wolfgang

by victorwkf Updated Sep 11, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

St Wolfgang is named after the bishop who founded the Pilgrimage Church in this town by throwing his axe from the Falkenstein hill into the valley below and building on the spot where the axe landed. Today, there is a colourful plague next to the Pilgrimage Church depicting the history of the town (see photo).

    The road tunnel

by victorwkf Updated Sep 11, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When you are going to St Wolfgang from nearby Strobl town by road, you will pass by some beautiful scenery of forest and houses. Before reaching St Wolfgang, the road will go into a tunnel and just like some magic, when the road opens up, the beautiful town of St Wolfgang and the Wolfgangsee lake appears before your eyes. I find this very interesting and refreshing :)

In case you need postal services, there is a post office located next to the tourist information centre of the town near to the main road. Just like other buildings in St Wolfgang, even the post office is situated in a classical and beautiful building of this region.

    Tourist Information Centre

by victorwkf Updated Sep 11, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Tourist Information Centre of St Wolfgang is conveniently located along the town centre are just next to the main road where the vehicle tunnel opens up into the town itself. When you are at the town, it is best that you go to this information centre first to get a copy of the detailed map and other brochures. If you are taking the Postbus buses back to Strobl and then Salzburg (or other towns), the town bus-stop is just next to the tourist information centre.

    Pilgrimage Church

by victorwkf Updated Sep 11, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Pilgrimage Church at St Wolfgang is one of the landmark of the town. It was built in the 14th century, and apparently there is a historical path for pilgrims from the nearby town of St Gilgen to St Wolfgang via the western shore of Wolfgangsee lake. This path is in honour of St Wolfgang, the bishop who was said to have founded this church.

    Going up to Schafberg mountain

by victorwkf Updated Sep 11, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Schafberg is a mountain located next to St Gilgen, and one of the must-do activity is to take the famous Cog-railway train up the mountain and have beautiful views of the surroundings on a clear day. The train station is about 10 minutes walk from St Wolfgang along the main road.

For more information and photos, please see my transportation tip section of this VT page as well as my VT Schafberg page. Personally, I think this trip is worth the money though it does not come cheap (24 euros return per person if you want to take the train to the top).

Im Weissen Rossl (White Horse Inn)

by victorwkf Updated Sep 11, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Im Weissen Rossl (White Horse Inn) is one of the most famous landmark in St Wolfgang. This hotel is located at the waterfront area of Wolfgangsee lake, right in the centre of the town. The fame comes because this is the setting for Ralph Benatzky's operetta "The White Horse". Originally I wanted to stay here for 1-2 days but the hotel room facing the lake was beyond my budget, and furthermore I will be staying at Zell Am See (see my VT Zell Am See page) which offers about the same scenery so I do not want a repeat.

As for the hotel itself, I have looked through the internet while planning for my Austria trip and it is really good (5 star standard) especially if you can get a room facing the lake. Also, the swimming pool at this hotel is on the lake itself (see photo) and offers fantastic views while you are enjoying your swim. More photos are at the travelogue section of this VT page, and the hotel website is below.

    Town of St Wolfgang

by victorwkf Updated Sep 11, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

St Wolfgang is a very charming and relaxing town surrounded by the Wolfgangsee lake and mountains, with the Schafberg mountain just next to the town (see my VT Schafberg page). This town is one of the most visited places in the Salzkammergut region, and can be easily reached by taking the comfortable Postbus (see transportation trip) from Salzburg (about 2 hours ride one way). It is also possible to reach from Vienna via trains to either Salzburg or Bad Ischl town, followed by transfer to Postbus buses.

Besides being a beautiful town, St Wolfgang is famous for its White Horse Inn, pilgrimage church as well as the Wallfahrtskirche (a gallery of religious art with several altars from Gothic to Baroque, opens daily from 9am to 6pm). More information about the various sights of St Wolfgang are at my other tips of this page.

    The Salzkammergut Region of Austria

by victorwkf Updated Sep 11, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Salzkammergut is a very beautiful region east of Salzburg made up of majestic mountains, several beautiful lakes dotted with classical Austrian towns. The name Salzkammergut is related to the mining of salts because this region rose to fame and fortune because of the salt which is available here. Another reason why the Salzkammergut is famous is because some parts of the classical movie "The Sound of Music" was filmed here, including the start of the movie where it shows beautiful mountain area before zooming in to Maria who then sings "The hills are alive with the sound of music .....".

The various places in Salzkammergut can be easily reached from Salzburg by buses or packaged tours. Personally, I prefer taking the buses and exploring this place on my own and perhaps stay 1-2 days at the towns here.

Although there are many towns in Salzkammergut, the most famous and often visited ones are St Wolfgang, St Gilgen, Hallstatt and Mondsee. These towns are next to the lakes, with beautiful mountain scenery.

    Wood carvings

by codrutz Written Aug 24, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You will find this carved tree trunk and vis a vis a collection of smaller carvings (unfortunately I don't have a picture of that), telling you that at 3 kilometers from St. Wolfgang you will find the workshop of this artist making this silly looking carvings. I suppose it's great to pay a visit and maybe buy one for your home. Faces are really silly and nice looking :)

    Promenade

by acemj Updated Mar 21, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

On the western side of town on the way toward the small train station that has departures exclusively to the top of Schafberg, the mountain that presides above the town, you'll find a small waterfront promenade. This is a great spot to take pictures of the Pilgrimmage church and the town itself or just to come and relax on one of the many wooden benches. Boats also dock here and there is even a stage where performances of Ralph Benatsky's famous comic opera, The White Horse Inn, occasionally entertain the crowds.

    Pfarrkirche St. Wolfgang

by acemj Updated Mar 21, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Pilgrimmage Church of St. Wolfgang (built in the 14th and 15th centuries) is the architectural centerpiece of the town. It's located in the main square and is definitely worth a visit for its richly decorated interior, highlighted by the winged altar by Michael Pacher, which stands an impressive 12 meters high.

Even if you've visited a number of Europe's finest religious sanctuaries, you are sure to be impressed with the ornate display of this relatively small church. Oh, and it was the church used in the wedding in a little movie called "The Sound of Music".
