Parking Garage in Sankt Wolfgang by seamandrew Finding parking in Sankt Wolfgang (especially free parking) is a bit tricky but not difficult. To be on the safe side, just take the car to one of the parking lots or the parking garage near the tunnel entrance. It's worth the money to not have to worry if you have parked your car illegally. On the way to Sankt Wolfgang by seamandrew The only road to Sankt Wolfgang approaches from the east from the small village of Strobl. You will see signs on route 158 for Sankt Wolfgang and Schafberg. Head for them and you will pass through Strobl. The downside about having only one way to get there is that it takes quite long to get there. But the plus side is you get to enjoy the beautiful mountains and landscapes surrounding the Wolfgangsee. The Kaisern Elisabeth pulls in. by seamandrew On May 20th, 1873 the passengertravel at the "Wolfgangsee" was opened. The wheel steamer "Kaiser Franz Josef I." provided a connection over the lake and at that time it was praised as a "high technical achievement". The ship "Kaiser Franz Josef I."still exists, but the huge impellers are kept in motion by a diesel engine since the early fifties. The 33 m long nostalgia ship holds 200 persons and was already star in numerous films. Today, the OEBB fleet counts six motor ships with the flagship "Wolfgang Amadeus". The largest ship, "Austria" seizes altogether 365 passengers and could be rented like all other ships of the fleet also for round travels or group journeys. The OEBB lines belong to the fixed constituent of the region "Wolfgangsee" and enjoys largest popularity with guests from close and far. The fleet provides the connection of the places approximately around the lake and represents the most impressive possibility of exploring this pictorial area. Wolfgangsee ferries stop at the village center (right next to the White Horse Inn) in Sankt Wolfgang and also by the Schafberg railway. Here you see the Kaiserin Elisabeth pulling in by the Schafberg railway station. Leave a Comment

by horse-carriage through St. Wolfgang by globetrott It might be a nice & romantic idea - and certainly not really a bargain - to take one of the horse-carriages to explore the town of St. Wolfgang. Better fix the rates well in advance, so you will not be surprised at the end of the ride ! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

the technique of Schafberg - bahn by globetrott All the great technique may easily be seen from outside, and not at all hidden, like other trains do. Everything looks so completely in perfect order ! The most of the track has just 1 rail and the opposite trains will have to wait in one of the 2 stations on the way up to Schafberg - summit. Schafbergbahn by globetrott Here on this model you may see, how it is possible to have a train going up such a steep mountain : There is a gear in the middle of the rails, that holds the whole train and moves it up safely since 1873 - when this train-track was constructed and built within only 1 year. It was mainly ment for rich tourists and of course for the emperor, who was often hunting in that area. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

the emperor's saloon-wagon by globetrott The emperor used the train ONLY ONCE - and he certainly said afterwards ( like he always used to say ) : "...Es war sehr schön, es hat mich sehr gefreut..." (It was very nice, I enjoyed it a lot ) So the company always had a seperate saloon-wagon for the emperor, but did never use it again. Nowadays this saloon-wagon of the emperor is used as a part of a kiosk ( it is rather a storage room) and you may see it just a few meters from the train-station. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

St. Wolfgang - the Schafberg - bahn by globetrott There are still the trains of 1873 in service and it might be a good idea to be there in time to get a nice seat at the window and to have a look for the technical side of the trains, before you take your seat. every train consists of 2 waggons only, and whenever more waggons are needed, several trains will leave just behind each other. Schafberg - bahn in St. Wolfgang by globetrott When taking the train uphill, it might be the best to get a seat at the left of the train for the best places to take photographs ! Each compartment consists of 2 opposite benches and a middle-corridor - and the corridor ends in a door, that will be locked by the conductor from outside during the ride. So you may move between the 2 windows ONLY if the compartement is not fully seated. Once you are in the train, you better get a seat at the window right away ! Leave a Comment Theme: Train

Steyr Puch Haflinger by globetrott Be prepared to pay for parking your car inside the village on any of the many parking-lots. The prices varie a lot, according to the distance to the centre of town Your hotel might have a parking for their guests, but better check in advance, how much the fees are there, as it will mostly NOT be included in the hotel-price. There is also a big parking-house - I will check out the prices next time ! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The car on my pic is one of my all-time-dream-cars, and I saw it on top of Schafberg ! It is most probably the ONLY car beeing able to go up these small and very steep mountain-roads. In around 1964 this type of car STEYR PUCH HAFLINGER made the world record of a car driving up on top of a mountain in the Andes/S.America with a hight of more than 6000 meters. Well, this car with a length of 2,60 meters actually became my dream-car for my planned expeditions and tours around the world, when I was 10 years old, long time BEFORE I found out, it might be rather small for me, once that I grew up, beeing 186 cm now... ;-)) But one day I will have one of them, and ship it to Iceland to explore the remote parts...
