Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut Things to Do

  • Schafbergbahn

We parked our car in the Gschwendt parkplatz and then caught the ferry across the lake to the Schafbergbahn landing stage. You can also pick up the ferry at various locations around the lake. I purchased the tickets on board the ferry and the price was about 69 euros for the pair of us and it did save queuing at the station. The train station is...

  • Hotel Schwarzes Rossl (The Black Horse)

Next to the famous Im Weissen Rossl (White Horse Inn), there is another hotel called Hotel Schwarzes Rossl (The Black Horse). Interesting because "white" and "dark" are next to each other :)Similar to the White Horse Inn, The Black Horse is conveniently located in the town centre area and the architecture/facade is very classical and beautiful....

  • Schafberg Cog Railway

Schafberg Cog Railway, built over 100 years ago, climbs the 5,300ft Schafberg mountain the easy way. A ride on this nostagic train is a must do - especially for those fans of the Sound of Music tour - I'm sure you'll recognise it from the film. Check the website for up to date fares and timetables.

  • Escaping the crowds

A good way to escape the crowds in the town is to take a delightful trip on a boat around the Wolfgangsee. The glacial water is an amazing blue colour and you can explore other resorts on the lake such as Strobl at tone end and St Gilgen with its Mozart connection at the other end (see more in off the beaten path).Check the link for timetables and...

  • Postalm

Driving about half an hour on a climbing road from Sankt Wolfgang following Postdalm Arena signs you will reach this beautiful hiking area. Four main hiking trails (Rundwege) starts from the parking lot (in August 2007 the parking lot was full and cars were all along the road on the grass).Along the trails there are around ten "hutte" and...

  • Enjoy the best beer in the world

I dont know what beer you like but this is for me the best beer in the world: weizen/weiss (white/unfiltered) beer, which can be hell (blonde) or dunkel (dark). Taste it once and you will ever crave for it, even at home when you drink your light bud which is 99% water with a taste of malt (exaggerating a little but this is really a perfect beer).

The Backerai Konditorai Cafe Gandl is a bakery which has nice breads, cakes and other pastries (and the price is reasonable). It is conveniently located at the St Wolfgang town centre area just next to the post office and near to the tourist information centre. If you are on a budget, then you may want to consider the breads, cakes or pastries from...

  • Mmmm. Love camembert

In the main square, you'll find the Hotel-Gasthof Weisser Bar where I had a really delicious salad. The interior of the restaurant is pretty basic, but neat and clean. There's a bar, some outdoor seating and plenty of tables inside. I had this salad seen in the picture with cranberries and fried camembert. YUM!!

  • Performing Arts

If you want to see Ralph Benatzky's famous comic Opera, The White Horse Inn, come in the summertime when there are regular performances of it at the Michael Pacher-Haus on the west side of town.

  • Relaxed atmosphere

I stopped in to this little place because I saw a soccer game on the television. I was in St. Wolfgang during the Euro2004 tournament and I ended up watching the Czech Republic beat Denmark 3-0 from this little bar. The food selection was pretty minimal, so I just had some fries and a couple beers. The bartenders were friendly and everyone was just...

  • Youngish crowd

I popped in this place on the west side of the town center and had a quick beer. The crowd was a little thin and a little on they young side, so I didn't stay long. They have food, a good selection of mixed drinks and were playing some interesting Latin music.

  • Take the ship to cruise Wolfgangsee lake

There are several ships which you can take and cruise along the beautiful Wolfgangsee lake, of which the most famous is the MS Kaiser Franz Josef (a nostalgic ship with paddle wheel propulsion built in 1873). There are several places to take these ships at the Wolfgangsee, where the most popular are St Wolfgang as well as the town of St Gilgen at...

One of the highlights of a visit to St Wolfgang is to take the famous Cog Wheel Railway up to the Schafberg mountain just next to the town. If you are taking the Postbus bus, there is a bus stop just in front of the railway station at the bottom of the mountain. The train leaves about every one hour and the journey takes about 1 hour. If you are planning to get souvenirs of St Wolfgang, there are some souvenir shops at the town centre area near to the White Horse Inn for you to shop around. • Salty shop

St. Wolfgang is salt mining country and the biggest evidence of that is the tourists that flock to the mines for tours and to buy salt-related products. This shop near the main square is full of such products most of which claim to have medicinal and health benefits that I cannot verify. However, the bath salts and other various spa-type products...

  • Soap

This place has an amazing selection of high-priced soap items and it makes for a good gift buying destination in St. Wolfgang. Buying a bar of soap for a friend, even expensive soap, isn't going to break your bank. It also makes your bag smell better if that annoying customs agent decides to search your bag. All kinds of soap in every imaginable...

Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut Local Customs

  • Interesting carvings

There's a shop just above the main square in St. Wolfgang that has these faces carved into tree trunks. I don't know that there's any cultural significance here, but they are interesting to look at.

  • Edelweiss

Edelweiss is an alpine flower that grows throughout this region usually at altitudes from around 5000 to 8000 feet. The plant is a perennial from a scientific standpoint, but from a cultural and mythological standpoint it is revered as a love charm, a medicinal wonder-flower and a Talisman to ward against evil spirits.

Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut Warnings and Dangers

  • Take warm clothing

When we started the journey at the Schafbergbahn Station it was warm and I was only lightly dressed. When we reached the top of the Schafberg it was warm in the restaurant but shortly after we left, it started to drizzle and the temperature dropped a few degrees. Though we had packed light coats these were not enough protection and it we felt the...

Being a tourist attraction near to Salzburg, St Wolfgang can be very crowded with tourists especially during summer season. Therefore, plan ahead especially if you want to stay in the town for a few days. • Unpredictable Weather

Just like other mountainous regions, the weather in the Salzkammergut region is rather unpredictable. It may be sunny in Salzburg and the weather here may be totally different. Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut Tourist Traps

  • Nice trap

In the summertime, the whole town of St. Wolfgang can be crowded with tourists, but if you head here before the onslaught arrives, you'll be rewarded by a rather sleepy lakeside slice of heaven. I was here in June and it really wasn't crowded at all. The weather was pleasant, but not hot enough to inspire jumping into the lake and therefore the...

This interesting fountain is a new addition to the town, it was not there in 2007 when I first visited Sankt Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee. The giant stone ball is actually moving on the water and you can change direction with your hand. • Warm summer and colourful flowers

Summer is perhaps the best time to visit St Wolfgang because of the warm weather, greenery and beautiful flowers. The months of July and August will be very crowded because of peak summer season. To avoid too many crowds, the months of May-June and Sep-Oct would be good options.
