In the Nature Reserve Area 'Gesause' there are some rivers that you can raft on! A few companies provide trips for both experienced and unexperienced thrill seekers.
We were the unexperienced ones and loved it! Our trip went to the Salza river which usually is a category III, but that didn't apply anymore (again because of the rains). The water level was very high according to our 'fuhrer' and we could therefore raft for 14 km!
The trip was fantastic! (Although we would ride a river with more adrenaline effects the next time, it was a good first start.)
What also made the rafting so great was the completely unique ecosystem of the woods around the river. Mist floated over the splashing water, tree tops were tilting over the banks and you would expect a gnome to cross the river in front of your boat. Mystical land...
Equipment: All the gear you would need is provided by the rafting company. You will get a lovely helmet of course and a thick neoprene suit to keep you safe from scratches and most of the cold water.
When people think of scuba diving they usually form a picture in their minds of tropical sites with corals and beautifully coloured fish. (I must admit, this is my addiction).
But diving in the Austrian lakes is a totally different experience. Unfortunately we had bad visibility compared to normal days, because of all the floating particles the rivers brought into the lake (due to the terrible rains). Nevertheless we got to experience a little bit of that amazing clearness that is normal for Austrian waters at greater depth. You feel like you're swimming in a diamond!
The life in the lakes is not overwhelming, but certainly interesting, as are the underwater woods.
Equipment: All gear can be rented at the dive centers. We did the diving with Austrian Divers, which is a very good center. They are serious, but don't forget the fun and will educate at an appropriate pace. Everything is there and they can also take you to various lakes such as Mondsee, Grundlsee, Hallstattersee and Wolfgangsee.
