Christkindl
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Church of Christkindl dues its fame to a legend, according to which Ferdinand Sertl, who suffered from epilepsy, when visited the area at the end of 17th century, placed a small statue of the Christ Child he carried with him in a niche in a pine tree and prayed for relief from his illness. His health improved and the area became a place of pilgrimage and at the beginning of in 18th was built the present church. Nowdays it's famous among children for its Christmas Post Office.

note: I have put this under off the beaten path in spite I'm sure it's not underated but because you need a mean of transport to reach it...

St. Florian is a great place for a stop-over on your way from Steyr to Linz. It is mainly famous for its benedictinian monastery with a large staircase by Jakob Prantauer.
At first a small pilgrim-church was built around the grave of St. Florian, later it became a monastery and the foundations of today's Basilika date back to the 4th century.
In 1667-1689 the monastary was rebuilt completely in Baroque style - the way you see it today.
St. Florian was a pilgrim-church for more than 1700 years and in order to be able to accomodate the Austrian emperors, when they came to St. Florian, 13 rooms of the monastery were made for the emperor and his ministers ...
Last time these rooms were used in 1782, when pope Pius VI was in St. Florian.
These rooms may be seen as well during the guided tour !
The main organ is named after the famous organist and composer Anton Bruckner, who is also buried under his organ - in a vault, that might be visited in the guided tour.
Have a look at these great ornaments, stucco-works and sclptures around the organ !!
    From May 16th till Oct. 17th 2004 there will be a live ogan-concert of 20 minutes at 02.30 p.m.
    Entry fee is 2,50 euro

Gmunden and the Traunsee make a great day-excursion from Steyr. Schloss Orth is the name of that wonderful water-castle built on an island of Traunsee, it is a famous place for wedding-ceremonies. The castle once belonged to a prince of the Habsburg-family, who did not return from South America in the 19th century.
Gmundner Porcelain is well known as well and at the townhall you may see lots of ceramic bells of the chimes. Take a cruise by a steam-ship, Traunkirchen is another place of interest nearby, see my next tip !

    Christkindl - a pilgrim-church close to Steyr
  • Tip Rating:
  • Christkindl is a small pilgrim-church close to Steyr. About the year 1695 a musician from Steyr called Ferdinand Sertl got a small wax-figure from a monastery in Garsten - He put this small figure into a hole in a tree and came there every day in order to pray to get healing from his epileptic attacs and after a certain time the illness was completely over.
And the rumor was spread about the " miracle " done by the small puppet in the tree.
In Christkindl you may see :
    1) Klauda-Krippe
This crib is put into a former stable - and you may sit there like in a small theatre and watch the figures of the crib move through the artificial landscape, 300 figures, all carved in wood by Karl Klaude (*1895-1977) Klauda was working for more than 40 years on this crib, constructed everything by himself and all these figures are MOVING their head, hands and tools
    2) Pöttmesser-crib
In the same building, but one floor up you will find Pöttmesser-crib, one of the biggest existing cribs in the world with 58 square meters and it consists of 778 figures, carved in wood and fully dressed
The biggest figures are about 30 cm high
The museum with both cribs is open daily
    from Nov.29th till Jan.6th - 09.00a.m. til 05.00p.m.
    BUT: Dec.25th and Jan 1st 01.00-05.00p.m.
    and Dec.31st - 09.00a.m.-01.00p.m.
    Entry 2,50 € (1,-€)

    Quenghof
  • Tip Rating:
  • Quenghof is a former manor-farm dating back to the year 1289 ! Nowadays it is used as a restaurant and for flee-markets etc. by the local Lions Club.
You may also rent Quenghof for your private festivities - see the webpage and telephone-number below ! The best about Quenghof is the great facade that was restored recently and has so many great details and the innercourt .
You will pass by Quenghof, when you drive by car from the centre of Steyr to Christkindl : At first you will turn to the left, instead of entering the tunnel, then you follow the main road to Christkindl and after a turn to the right, you will see Quenghof at the right. There is a large parking as well.

    Traunkirchen & the fisher-pulpit
  • Tip Rating:
  • Traunkirchen is not far from Gmunden and so you may combine a visit there with a short stop-over at the famous fisher-pulpit of Traunkirchen:
The pulpit has the shape of a fishingboat, and 2 persons sitting inside the boat, throwing a net while they are paddeling. The fisher-boat symbolizing a scene of the bible, when Jesus and St.Peter caught so plenty of fish on Lake Genezareth, that they could feed everyone of the big crowd of people...

Kefermarkt is in a distance of 87 Km north of Steyr, but in fact it is worth a daytrip from Steyr when you are a fan of old architecture and geat woodcarvings dating back to medieval times. Kefermarkt is just a small village and you would never expect such a special work of art there. "Kefermarkter Altar" is considdered one of the best wooden altars of Europe and a daytrip there may be combined with Linz and Poestlingberg, or even better with Freistadt and the Pferdeeisenbahn in Kerschbaum.
The train takes about 2-3 hours one way from Steyr to Kefermarkt
31 euros is the ordinary return-ticket by train
By car it is less than 2 hours, when you use the highway
click here in order to see my Kefermarkt-page!

A town located not on tourist paths .....
  • Tip Rating:
  • In my opinion the whole town is located off the beaten path .... but everything in Austria except Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck is off the beaten path.

Its a wonderful town and if you are on the way from Vienna to Salzburg (or Salzburg to Vienna), take some time and visit it. You won´t regret it!

    The romantic road
  • Tip Rating:
  • Steyr is a town located on the romantic road, which connects Vienna and Salzburg. But it is not the fastest way, but definitely the most beautiful. There are many places along this route, which are "must-sees" in my opinion, such as Klosterneuburg with its wonderful monastery, Krems, the Wachau valley, Melk, Seitenstetten (another wonderful monastery), STEYR and Gmunden.... to name only some of them....

I will check this route and post it here.
