 | Steyr Things To Do | Tips 11 - 20 of 75 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (75) On my picture you can see what could have been the Schuberthaus. It is the house in the middle with the yellow color. While Schubert spent a lot of time in this house, he never lived here. He visited the daughter of Mr. Stalzer often and performed in the house. The Viennese composer Franz Schubert came to the wealthy industrial city of Steyr in 1819 at the invitation of Johann Vogl, a native of the city. He stayed there for the better part of a year and while there, he gained a commission to write what would become one of his best-known works, the Trout Quintet , and set a number of poems to music (like the Erlkönig). Well okay, I'm not sure if he set the Goethe poem Erlkönig to music in Steyr, but you get the point. Schubert fell in love with the one of the daughters of Mr. Stalzer, but her father did not accept him as a suitable suitor so Schubert's love went unfulfilled. The actual Shuberthaus is somewhere on the Pfarrgasse and I did not get to see it. Leave a Comment Address: Stadtplatz 16, 4400 Steyr

The Bummerlhaus a symbol of the town with its gothic appearance and steep gable. In its present form, it dates back to 1497, and has a late gothic three-story effect. This is one of Steyr's real architectural gems and worth a look. Leave a Comment

The Kirchengasse heads west-north-west from the Michaelerplatz where the Michaelerkirche is located. Along this little cobbled street, you'll find that most of the buildings here are also quite old. I didn't take all the time I should have to explore this part of town so please feel free to get the upper hand on me. Leave a Comment Directions: West of the Michaelerplatz.

While at first it may seem a like a waste of time to visit a puppet museum (that's what this place is), I can tell you its worth the small price of admission and the time spent there. For one, hearing the local children's laughter at the various antics of the characters is very enriching, but also, you are witness to one of the most famous mchanical puppet theaters and the dialect in which the performance is carried out is also quite funny to hear. The Steyrer Kripperl is housed along with the Municipal Museum in what used to be a granary (Innerberger Getreidestadel). Peformances at the Steyrer Kripperl are only held in December and January. Leave a Comment Directions: At the Southend of Grünmarkt just south of the Stadtplatz.

The composer Anton Bruckner wrote his 8th and 9th symphony during one of his frequent visit of Steyr and he is said to like to play the Chrisman organ at the parish church. And in front of this church, you can find a memorial to him. Then I read he also stayed in the neighbouring sacristan house, the sacristan house of my pic. Leave a Comment

Bummerlhaus is the eldest house on the main-square and the fassade is still made of sandstone. It got its name by a small golden lion that is on the guild-sign of the house. There is a bank inside that building nowadays, and every evening you might take a look from outside when the wooden ceiling on the 1st floor is lighted and you may see the great woodcarvings of the ceiling ! Leave a Comment Address: A-4440 Steyr - StadtplatzDirections: Bummerlhaus is in the centre of the town-square / Hauptplatz of Steyr, in the very centre of town.

Stalzerhaus is the name of the yellow building on the right of my 1st picture. The building once belonged to a rich merchant, who was the father of Franz Schubert's big but unfulfilled love... Her father was against the marriage of his daughter with an almost unknown musician. Schubert often used to be a guest of the family and he played the piano on the 1st floor. (these rooms on 1st floor are nowadays the rooms that you may rent in Hotel Mader, who has rented a big part of this house for the hotel !) I once met someone, who told me that he still keeps letters from his grand-grand-grand-mother, and they are the loveletters written by Franz Schubert to the young lady in Stalzerhof... So you may think of Franz Schubert, when walking by this yellow building. You may as well get inside that big entrance-gate, WITHOUT having to fear to be arrested , and will see one of the beautiful innercourts of town ! Leave a Comment Address: A-4440 Steyr - StadtplatzDirections: Stalzerhof is the building between Bummerlhaus and Hotel Mader

Kollertor is another one of the many towngates that is left from the medieval townwall of the city of Steyr. In the 15th century Steyr was the only place that was granted the right by the austrian empire to produce iron goods, knives, scyths, rifles etc. by the iron that was won at Erzberg. The iron was taken to Steyr by rafts on the river Enns. The river Steyr was used for the hammer-works and so Steyr became rich and wealthy and it had to be protected by so many towngates. In the year 1500 Steyr was the 2nd largest town of Austria, after Vienna of course... My last 2 pics show another great building close to Kollertor. Leave a Comment Directions: Kollertor is the only towngate left over at the right bank of the river Enns, it is about 200 meters from Hotel Minichmayr

Museum Arbeitswelt was built into an old hammer-work and still today you may see the river Steyr flowing through the entrance-hall. In fact it is made in a great way giving you the feeling to be inside an old factory, while showing processes of work , history of labour and various exhibitions. Museum Arbeitswelt is open daily except Mondays : March 6th - December 20th : 09.00a.m. - 05.00p.m. adults pay 5 euros, children 3 euros families pay 9 euros ! _________________________ There is a large parking next to the museum, BUT you have to pay 1 euro per hour like in the rest of the town. in order to get to this parking you have to drive through the tunnel, and when coming from the old town, you turn right after the 2nd crossing of the river Steyr. (there is a trafic-light at this place !) Leave a Comment Address: A-4400 Steyr, Wehrgrabengasse 7Phone: +43 (0) 7252/77351Directions: Museum Arbeitswelt is below Schloss Lamberg, at its side, where the river Steyr is flowing, at the opposite bank of the river. Schloss Vogelsang was once the villa of Josef Werndl - who invented the modern kind of rifle (Hinterlader) - and is now used as private home for senior citizens ( who are able to afford the living in this beautifully restored castle ) - you may have a short walk in the park, free of charge and without restrictions, but unfortunately you cannot see anything inside of the lovely building, except that you pretend to search for one of the elderly people there... Leave a Comment Directions: Schloss Vogelsang is not far from the Promenade and Werndl-Denkmal.
