The Capital of the Province

by hunterV

Linz, the province capital, attracts people by its historical old city where you can see buildings of different architectural styles such as:Trinity Column in Hauptplatz (Main Square), Linz Castle, Mozarthaus, St.Martin’s Church, New Cathedral (by the way, the biggest in Austria), Old Cathedral.Pöstlingsberg is one the symbols of the capital that the local residents call tenderly “Acropolis of Linz”.More information at:Tourismusverband Linz1 HauptplatzLinzTe.:070/7070-1777E-mail: tourist.info@linz.atwww.linz.atwww.linztermine.at

Krippenstein

From the Obertraun side of the Dachtstein mountains you can take the same cable car to go up, but now you take the next cable car ride at the Middle Station so that you end up on the highest peak, which is 2100 m. high and is called Krippenstein. You seem to have fallen into a totally different world (it reminded me of a Lord of the Ring' scenery). No trees, just moss and rocks as far as the eye can see. Very impressive landscape that makes you feel very tiny. You can even see the glacier on the other side of the Dachstein. There are several hiking trails of which one of them is a nice 3 km that will lead you to the Valley Station Gjaidalm (the last stop of the Cable Car).

You will feel like a kid again when doing this: the sommerrodelbahn. This means racing down a toboggan run in a small black luge. There are two runs you can choose from: one with a lot of turns and the other a bit more stretched. Both are 1300 meters long and will give you some good fun!You and your little cart will be towed up the hill by some sort of ski lift (during which you will have a wonderful view of the Wolfgangsee and its surroundings) and then you are free to go!

Salty business

by ayesh

In the Salzkammergut area (the name says is already) you can find various salt mines which can be visited. Three mines in specific, which are the ones in Hallein, Hallstatt and Altaussee. They all belong to the 'Salzwelten' project and are all very nice. We visited the salt mine in Altaussee. This is one of the largest still working salt mines and has been used in WW II for the protection of some very important pieces of art.The tour will help you understand the life that evolved around these salt sources, the impact it has/had and will leave you amazed with all the additional information you got. The deep chambers are filled with used machinery and different types of salt blocks are exposed to give you more insight..At the beginning of the tour you will be required to put on a white overall (most of them aren't so white anymore). Then you will see an interesting movie of the history of...

Dachstein Eishöhle

Near Obertraun there is the Krippenstein Cable Car that will take you up the mountain to the middlestation Schönbergalm (you can go further but we had no time and wanted to do the caves first). After you have gotten out of the cable car you will get your directions to go to either the Mammoth Cave, the Koppenbrüller Cave or the Ice Caves. We only visited the Ice Caves, but the other seem to very impressive as well. The climb up to the entrance of the Ice Cave is a serious one. Eventhough the paved path is good, it is quite steep and you will have to catch your breath at the top. A guide will take you on a 1,5 hour tour through the various incredible domes with names such as: Tristan, Parcival and King Arthur Dome. The caves contain 30.000 m2 of ice and there is a moment in the tour when you will be standing on 25 meters of ice!!
