Next to the Stiftskirche in Waldhausen you may see some remains of the old, giant monastery of the Augustinians ( Augustiner Chorherrn ). The upper buildings were destroyed but the basements were excarvated again some years ago and protected by a modern glass-roof. Unfortunately this interesting place was locked already, when I had been there last time ! Leave a Comment Directions: These excarvations are in a distance of just 50 meters to the Stiftskirche of Waldhausen.

Waldhausen has 2 churches and the larger one is this one : The Stiftskirche of the Augustinian monastery ( Augustiner-Chorherren-Stift ) dates back to the year 1147 when a large piece of land was given to build the monastery by Graf Otto von Machland. The first church was built in romanic-gothic style and totally rebuilt in 1650 in baroque style, the way you still see it today. In 1792 the monastery was closed and finally taken down in 1810. Could you imagine that it was planned also to destroy that lovely church ? Some local farmers were fighting against that decision, and so we are still able to see one of the most beautiful churches of that area. Leave a Comment Address: Waldhausen / StiftskircheDirections: The Stiftskirche of the Augustinian monastery was built on top of a hill north of the village of Waldhausen. You may see it already from a long distanceWebsite: www.waldhausen.at

The large Stiftskirche / monastery church of Waldhausen might be much larger and have more ornate decorations, the Pfarrkirche / parish-church of Waldhausen is for sure interesting as well ! This church dates back to the 13th century and was rebuilt in 1610, with one of the last gothic middle-naves of Austria. Dont miss that lovely fountain for baptism and the great main altar, the pulpit is nice as well. You may enter the Pfarrkirche of Waldhausen freely and without restrictions during the day. They are closing the gates at 06.00p.m., I was lucky to get there just in time and the lady with the keys was nice enough to wait a few minutes for me to leave again, before she could lock the gates. There is a great modern sculpture in front of the Stiftskirche in Waldhausen : Europäische Friedensrose / European Rose of Freedom This sculpture is about 2 meters high and was created by Pius Frank in 2002. The large rose is symbolizing Jesus and the 3 rose-buds are symbols for all those people, working for peace.
