Stadtplatz Wels – The Altstadt's showpiece.

by Jerelis Updated Apr 24, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Stadtplatz is a great place to hike. It features old historic structures and fascinating facades. In fact, there are about 64 Baroque facades in this square. These façades all front older, Gothic structures. So, fors ure I can state that the Altstadt's showpiece is most definitely the Stadtplatz.

What to expect exactly? Well the main square is a long, relatively narrow space, closed off at one end by the town's last surviving gateway, or Ledererturm, erected in 1376. The square's attractive, mostly Baroque, facades feature some very fine plasterwork, particularly on the imperial-yellow Rathaus from 1748; but by far the most exotic and distinctive building is the Renaissance Haus der Salome Alt. The house was once home to Hans Sachs – the most famous of Nuremberg's medieval Meistersänger, who wrote his first poems at the school in Wels – but it gets its name from Salome Alt, mistress of Wolf Dietrich. Opposite the Haus der Salome Alt stands the Stadtpfarrkirche, Gothic and fairly undistinguished but for a finely preserved Romanesque west door and some excellent medieval stained glass in the chancel. It might get crowded at the square, but most of all ... it is a must see!

    Address:
    Stadtplatz, 4600 Wels.

    Directions:
Right at the city centre, you definitely can’t miss it.

Just a nice entry at the Stadtplatz. Front facade of the Stadtpfarrkirche.

Stadtplatz Wels – Shape and size of 14th century.

by Jerelis Written Apr 24, 2012

The central square (called Stadtplatz) on which the Stadtpfarrkirche and the Ledererturm are situated, is the natural centre of Wels: a stage for various minor and major events, a reference point, a meeting place and the starting point or destination for walkers who want to discover the city. Historically speaking, the square began to operate in a shape and size similar to what we see today in the early years of the14th century.

In terms of sightseeing, you should simply go for stroll around the Altstadt town centre. Stay around the "Stadtplatz" main square. On of the landmarks of Wels is the medieval gate, the Ledererturm, which was built in 1367. It is the only piece of the medieval fortifications that has survived. The burgher houses on the main square have the facades typical for the historic towns in Upper Austria. The Rathaus or City Hall dates back to 1748. More interesting is probably the "Salome Alt Haus".

A great row of facades at the Stadtplatz. It's just great to have a look around. The Ledererturm at the west part of the square.

Stadtplatz Wels – The heart of the whole town.

Wels is known as the second biggest city in the Upper Austria State. We learned that the rich Wels History breathes in the city’s attractions. From the pavements to the buildings, Wels is indeed a city of culture and history. When we first arrived in Wels it was not too difficult for us to decide where to go first. We had our mind set on visiting the central square of Wels called the Stadtplatz. Not only did we have some thirst and thought that right here we would be able to find a nice pub, but we also knew that the Stadtplatz is the main square in the city.

The focal point of many cities and villages in Austria is the central square. Of course this differs from village to village. But in Wels there is no point of denying it … the Stadtplatz in Wels is most definitely the central square and therefore it is the heart of the whole town. Being at the square makes you realize that you are in Wels and also gives you the opportunity to smell the colourful life of the city!
