Those who travel to Bad Gastein from the South, i.e. through Carinthia, will find that the most direct route is through the railway tunnell.
Between the stations of Mallnitz and Boeckstein there is a regular service of special trains that carry cars.
They are scheduled every hour (every 30 minutes on weekends in the high season). The train can carry many cars and there are no reservations to be made.
If you want to use this train, you must be at the station at least 5 minutes before the time of departure, and queue at the toll gate, when your turn comes you pay the fee (17 euro per car), the passengers go directly to the passengers' wagon while the driver parks the car on the train. Then he/she joins the passengers because remaining inside the cars during the journey is forbidden.
The whole procedure is simple and fast, but it is important to know in advance all the rules, especially the size limit of vehicles (max height is m 3.7, max width m 2.1).

Anyone travelling by road from the south near Klagenfurt to Badgastein will most likely come via the Katschberghöhe mountain pass.

Katschberghöhe is a popular winter sport resort but there are also many great hiking trails to be enjoyed during those warm summer months.

Those who go to Bad Gastein without a car will find there a good service of taxis and minibuses. Not only you will find them parked outside the railway station but you can book with them a transfer from Salzburg or trips to places of interest.
To give you an idea of the rates (up-dated in 2007) a transfer from the station to some place within the town costs EUR 6. A collective taxi to Salzburg Airport EUR 30 per person.
In the website you will find the online forms, in English, to ask for quotes and make reservations.

Bad Gastein is on the railway route that connects Salzburg to the southern part of Austria. It takes about one hour and a half to get to Salzburg, while Villach, in the other direction, is about one hour away.
It is nice to look at the timetable of trains, because they show also their further destinations: Venice, Croatia, Belgrade ... It gives a cosmopolitan feeling to this little station.

  • By bus: One daily bus runs in both directions between Salzburg’s Mirabellplatz and the railway station in Bad Gastein. Regular bus connections are always available along the valley.

By car: coming from/via Salzburg (approx. 1hour) - Tauern Autobahn, head south as far as Bischofshofen - take the Gasteiner Tal (Gastein Valley) exit and take federal highway 167.
coming from/via Villach (approx. 1 hour) - head on the Autobahn towards Salzburg - take the Mallnitz-Obervellach exit - then the federal highway to Obervellach - there drive onto the train and ride through the tunnel to Böckstein - then back on federal highway 167.
coming from/via Innsbruck (approx. 2 hours) - Autobahn via Kufstein - Salzburg - Villach - take the Zell am See/Gasteiner Tal exit - then fed. highway 167
