 | Oberndorf bei Salzburg Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 11 | | Popular Things To Do | Miscellaneous Things To Do Tips | All Tips (11) In medieval times Oberndorf had a special priviledge for several hundreds of years, granted by the royal austrian court : all transportation of the salt that was produced in the area around Salzburg was taken down at the river Salzach by boats and armed guards from Oberndorf. Salt used to be more precious at that time than gold or silver and in the museum in Oberndorf you still can see their uniforms and models of their boats. At December 24th, 1818 the world famous christmas-song "Silent Night Holy Night" (Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht) was song for the first time here in Oberndorf in the former Fischerkirche (Fishermen's church - see it on my last picture!), that unfortunately was destroyed by a heavy flood at the end of the 19th century and it was replaced by that tiny chapel that was built around the area where the altar of the former church used to be. Wallfahrtskirche Maria Bühel is dating back to the year 1663 and you will find this beautiful baroque church in the northern part of Oberndorf, about 800 meters from the Stille-Nacht-Platz. It has a lovely interior made by Antonio Beduzzi and even though the church is locked by an iron gate you can still see a lot through this fence and take your photographs like I did. Take a closer look at this very special exhibit in the town-museum of Oberndorf bei Salzburg : It is the original box for medical instruments used by Feldarzt Dr.Leopold Kohr ( the army-doctor) in WW I. Enlarge my pics and see the most impressive instrument: a saw, obviously in order to be used for amputations and similar cases... Well, at least it looks almost like brand-new, maybe it never was used at all, maybe its just because of the special kind of material used for such instruments... Take a look at my last picture : There is also a village called Oberndorf in Michigan/USA, and someone built a full-scale-replica of the Silent-Night-Chapel there as well ! The old watertower is another quite interesting building in Oberndorf bei Salzburg and you will find it opposite of the famous silent night-chapel. Much more beautiful than the water-tower is without doubt the lovely house next to it, including a great wooden balcony and stair-case. Inside that building you will find the tourist-office of Oberndorf. The river Salzach makes a significant bend in Oberndorf, a part of the river that is not so easy to go through for ships even nowadays. A high dam was added after several severe floods and just a few meters from Stille-Nacht-Platz you can enter that dam and walk on top of it and take a look at Laufen in Bavaria, at the other bank of the river. The Salzach also makes the borderline between Austria and Germany. The bridge over the Salzach used to have a custom-control for many centuries, but now both sides are part of the Schengen-treaty, so there won't be any controls any more. Leave a Comment Directions: Step up the stairs that you see on my 5th pic in order to get on top of the dam, shown on my 1st pic! |
the interior of the Silent Night-Chapel is quite simple, but it will give you also some informations about the famous christmas-song and will show you the faces of Joseph Mohr who was an assistant priest and had made the text for the song. The organ did not work so it was necessary to find a new and easy song to sing with just a guitar. so Joseph Mohr asked Franz Gruber, who was the teacher of a closeby village and organist to create the tunes for the text of Joseph Mohr. Within just a few hours the melody was created and performed the same day for the first time Leave a Comment |
