    Zipfer Bierhaus: Hearty food

by acemj Updated Dec 8, 2004

This restaurant/beer hall dates back to the 14th century and while the food wasn't anything the write home about, it was adequate and certainly filling and the beer was good (Zipfer beer, of course). Inside, there are vaulted ceilings and plenty of traditional wooden beer house features to give you that authentic feel (despite the tourist who are likely to be sitting nearby).

Stiegl Beer: The best beer (we think) in Europe...

Possibly the best beer in the world..

We didn't know where else to put this photo - this was the best beer we've ever tasted, but unfortunately you can't get it back here in Australia (don't worry - we've already contacted the brewery in Salzburg!). We are really not big beer drinkers, but this stuff was fantastic - something like 1 Euro for a 750ml bottle. We used to sit it out on our windowsill at night, until it was almost frozen!

    Augustinerbr?u Kloster M?lln: Salzburg's Best Beer Hall

    baroque beer hall

A unique large beer hall in a monastery (the only religious establishment in Austria still brewing). Here you can take your own picnic in or buy rolls, meats and salads from the several stalls in the corridors just outside the beer hall.

It was quite a popular place to keep out of the rain and a great place for a meeting.

Opening hours: Mon - Sat: 15:00-23:00 and Sun 14:30-23:00

Favorite Dish: The Augustine brewed beer can be bought at a self-service counter or for a bit extra will be brought to your table by the waiters. There was even a device to take the chill off the beer too.

Weissbierbrauerei Bernd Tobsch: Beer for Breakfast

    first of the day!

Doreen and Richie had made a two hour train journey to meet up with us in Salzburg.
This place not far from the train Station was our first port of call.

Favorite Dish: Well after a coffee I eventually sampled a banana beer which was very good. Doreeen and Richie also sampled some beers along with some type of sausage - which they expertly peeled the skin off - served with a sweet mustard and pretzels.

On the walk down from the castle about half way down is an open air restaurant and beer garden with one of the best views in Salzburg. On top of this the food is very good and reasonably priced also.
