The Kapitelplatz is another square with sights to see and even games to play, for located here, is a larger than life Chess set. A game of Chess was being played while I was there.
We came across this square when walking to the fortress.
Next to the square is the Cathedral, the Cathedral provostry and Archbishop's palace, a wing of St. Peter's Monastery and the Cathedral Chapter's mills.
What is it all about, that is "THE MAN ON THE GOLDEN BALL?"
Every Year, the Salzburg Foundation chooses a top-class Artist to develop a piece of public artwork in and for the city. The idea is an urban art and sculpture park of the highest quality within a period of 10 years
This piece of artwork was the result of the 6th Art Project in Salzburg. The artist, was Stephan Balkenhol and his work is known as "Sphaera" (Chapter Square) - a man on a spherical body ("Sphaera").
As you walk south out of Domplatz and past Salzburg Cathedral you will quickly find yourself in the middle of yet another square, the Kapitelplatz. Kapitelplatz is a large festive square with music and artist events and no shortage of great views. Outside of the views and crossroad of people, it does have three main attractions. As you enter the square you walk right into the first two, a giant check-boarded chess board with almost life-sized pieces and above it a 30 foot tall yellow ball with a man on top called Sphaera. Sphaera is a sculpture made in 2007 by artist Stephan Balkenhol and is locally called Mann auf Mozartkugel.
It's the vast square right below the Hohensalzburg. A lot of stuff around the square like the sphaera - the gold sphere with a man figure on top and just below it is a huge man-size chess and yes people play the chess with likewise huge chess pieces (see pics).
On the far left side is a beautiful fountain/pond with the statue of Neptune in the middle, and the side leading to the funicular railway to the castle is lined up with various stalls selling food and different snacks.
This statue (if you can call it that) is found in Kapitelplatz. Underneath the giant golden ball, people play chess with oversized chess pieces on an oversized chess board. Only in Austria!
Kapitalplatz has its very own attractive horse pond. Although not on the smale scale as the horse wash on the other side of the old town it is still very attractive.
One of the squares that surround the cathedral. Be sure to admire the Neptune Fontain and Horse Pond.
You will find a giant chees set in this square
