The beloved son of Salzburg has been standing there since 1842 while giving the city his impassive face -- the same impassive face the city residence wore when they attended his performance. Perhaps Ludwig Schwanthaler understood Mozart's feeling and decided to use the statue as a tool to give the city a taste of its own medicine. Leave a Comment

Adjacent to the Residenzplatz and in the shadow of the Domkirche, you'll find Mozartplatz which is dominated by a statue of its namesake, the great composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Above the statue is the Glockenspiel, a seventeenth century clock which appropriately chimes out music at a few times each day to the delight of crowds of tourists. Leave a Comment

The Getreidegasse near the cathedral is Salzburg’s busiest lane: one super-expensive boutique next to another show that the average tourist visiting Salzburg in a group or backpacking via “interrail” is definitely not the type of person that keeps the city going. The stores in the Getreidegasse make most of their money with the rich guests of the Salzburg Festival. It is unclear what the name “Getreidegasse” is derived from – “Getreide” means “cereal”, but this is no option since the medieval name that was partly used up to the 19th century was “Trabegasse” ever since 1150. It has been a major road since Roman times, when Salzburg was still known as Iuvavum. Up to the reign of Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, the Getreidegasse was the only major road across Salzburg and towards Bavaria. Mozart, Mozart and some more Mozart

Surely from the Residenzplatz, you must have caught a glimpse of a square which is dominated with a familiar statue that is of Mozart. If you come here you are now in Mozartplatz. The creation of this square was made possible by ddemolishing a number of housing groups in 1588 which is - again- during the time of Archbishop Wolf Dietrich. The bronze statue of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was presented or uvield to the public in 1842 in the presence of Mozart's two sons. So what else can you do in this area apart from taking your pictures with Mozart? Well look to the direction where the statue faces and you'll see Cafe Glockenspiel. This is one of the oldest cafe in Salzburg so it has its own character. Go and enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the world go by - that is if you have plenty of time to kill in Salzburg. If you would rather continue sightseeing then maybe you head down to the Domplatz. Leave a Comment

This is the statue of Mozart by Ludwig Schwanthaler in Mozart Square. The Bavarian king, Ludwig I, was an important promotor. He personally contributed a significant amount of money and also donated the marble pedestal, now owned by the Carolino Augusteum Museum. Leave a Comment

In the square known as Mozartplatz you will find this magnificent statue of Mozart, I am in fact not the slightest bit interested in Mozart...only interested in Mozartkuglen!! (see my shopping tips!).....but this statue looks fabulous nestled up by the mountains in a huge Baroque square. You are likely to visit the Mozartplatz to see this monument and to visit the tourist information centre, and maybe have refreshments in the Glockenspiel Cafe which is on the corner of the Platz. Naturally one of Salzburg's squares is honoured by Mozart. His statue here, by Ludwig Schwanthaler, was ceremoniously unveiled on September 5, 1842 in the presence of Mozart's sons. Mozart's widow, Constanze von Nissen, did not live to see the ceremony -she died on March 6th of the same year in the house at Mozartplatz 8

Mozartplatz has the city?s main tribute to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the form of a statue. The statue was unveiled in 1842 and may not have been cleaned since then ? it?s in need to a bit of an upgrade - you can see from the photo the a large amount of grime has built up. If you want to see a live view of the square have a look at the webcam address below. Leave a Comment

The man was linked to the city and therefore, has memorabelia around town. He lived here and composed here. He was born in Salzburg in 1765, and composed many works here. This monument was put up in 1842. In the square are cafes and shops, and a glockenspeil clock on the tower.
