    Michael (VTer globetrott) and I picked a great day to visit Sankt Gilgen. The weather was warm and sunny and there were no crowds at all. The town welcomed us with a relaxed atmosphere complete with flower boxes in windows, fountains and an amazing combination of mountain and lakeside setting.

    One of the first things I noticed in St. Gilgen was the bright red cable cars called the Zwolferhorn Seilbahn which scales the mountain above the town (called the Zwolferhorn). The peak tops out at 1522 meters only a couple hundred meters shorter than the might Schafberg. From the top, it's an easy two hour walk back down to the town by various trails that are clearly marked.

    Historically, Sankt Gilgen has been a wealthy man's playground for a long time. Even today, many of Salzburg's wealthier residents have homes here. Its location on the northwestern edge of the Wolgansee ensures that there are always great water activies to participate in, weather permitting of course.

    The Wolfgangsee is much loved and much used by visitors to St. Gilgen. You should plan on taking a ferry ride across the deep yet narrow lake, either partially across to St. Wolfgang, or all the way across to Stroibl, some 8 miles distance on the other side. The ferry leaves from a quay in the center of St. Gilgen, and is often a hub of bustling activity. Buy your ticket from the booth, and relax with a soothing beverage at one of the lakeside bars.

    Germans travel groups can be boisterous! I enjoyed observing them aboard the Wolfgangsee Ferry. Their tour leader led them in several rousing songs.
