The main altar shows Saint Aegidius surrounded by people, searching for help. This painting was most probably painted by Anton Lorenzoni, who was one of the servants of the prince-bishop. The rather small church is not so very much overloaded, like many other baroque churches ( like e.g. the church in St.Wolfgang im Salzkammergut, just at the other side of the lake) Leave a Comment Directions: In the very centre of the village

St. Gilgen's main square is centered on a smallish statue of Mozart in the middle of a fountain just in front of the Rathaus (Town Hall). The fountain was built in 1927 to forever link the town to the famous Austrian composer. However, St. Gilgen was actually the birthplace, not of Wolfgang Amadeus himself, but his mother Maria Pertl in 1720. His sister also lived in town. Michael and I spent a few minutes admiring the charming architecture of the buildings in this main square and soaking up the hillside charm of the town itself. Leave a Comment

On my picture you may see the tiny public beach of St.Gilgen and in the back the Schafberg, on the opposite shore of the Wolfgangsee. A historic steam-train will take you up there from St.Wolfgang within 45 minutes and you will have an excellent panorama-view over the surrounding mountains ! Have a look on my page about " St.Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee "!! Leave a Comment

Right in the very centre of St.Gilgen is Mozartplatz with a statue of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, playing his violin. Mozarts mother was born in St.Gilgen and many places and buildings remind of the Mozart Family. BIG SNOUTS? Yep, apparently Mozart's mom, Maria Anna Pertl, who was born in this house just off of the main square had an enormous nose. In fact, Mozart himself is said to have inherited this trait. His sister Mariann who also was known as Nannerl, also had a giant honker! Check out the stone carving on the wall outside the home and you'll notice the prominence of the Mozarts' noses. Right in front of the Mozart Gedenkstaette you may see a small fountain with a young girl, playing with a ring. It is to memorize the time, when Mozarts mother spent her childhood in Sankt Gilgen.
