Schmitten Things to Do

  • Benches along the way up the mountain

Schmittenhohe is a very friendly mountain to do hiking because of the well paved paths, good maps and signages and perhaps the most important are the benches situated nicely along the way. Some of these benches provide very good views e.g. Zell am See and Zeller See lake, views of the other side of the mountain.

  • Airport, planes and gliders

There is a small airport somewhere in between Zell am See and Kaprun towns. You will be able to see this airport during hiking when you are walking along the path next to the Areitbahn cablecar. There are small planes and gliders frequently taking off and landing at the airport, and you can see these planes and gliders flying near to the mountain.

  • Ponds on the mountain

If you are hiking in Schmittenhohe, you will discover that there are two ponds on the mountain. One is near to the Glocknerhaus restaurant (see photos) while the other is further up the trail near to the Breiteckalm restaurant. There is a comfortable see-saw at the first lake, as well as some benches for you to sit down and relax.

  • Zell am See (town) and Zeller See (lake)

Zell am See is a cosy and relaxing town located at the foot of Schmittenhohe mountain, next to a beautiful lake called Zeller See. This town will be very crowded with tourists during winter, and the accomodation, food etc will be more expensive during that time. During summer, there are less crowds and it is ideal to visit to experience the charm...

  • Cable car and ski lifts

There are several cable cars and ski lifts at Schmittenhohe (listed below), and a round trip will cost about $10 euros to $20 euros (children half price). Schmittenhohe is a very safe mountain to do hiking because the slope is quite gentle, the paths are good with signages, maps are available, many restaurants along the journey etc. However, there are a few minor things you should take note:

    - Start early if you want to hike all the way up to the top, which will take 6-7 hours if you are very slow. Give your sufficient time to reach back to your hotel before sunset. Alternatively, you can take the cablecar or ski lift up and then walk down, or the other way around.
    - Weather can be hot during summer, bring enough water, sunscreen, hats etc.
    - There are benches along the way, stop and take a rest if you are tired. Enjoy the scenery.
    - Beware of vehicles because they do travel up the mountain to the various restaurants.

  • Signages and hiking trails

The signatures along the various hiking trails (see photo) really helped us a lot, together with a map which you can obtain from your hotel if you decide to come. There are plenty of good hiking trails here, and each is designated with a number on the map. Choose the ones which are within your physical capabilities, and you can take the several...
