Schmitten Things to Do

  • Benches along the way up the mountain

Schmittenhohe is a very friendly mountain to do hiking because of the well paved paths, good maps and signages and perhaps the most important are the benches situated nicely along the way. Some of these benches provide very good views e.g. Zell am See and Zeller See lake, views of the other side of the mountain.

  • Airport, planes and gliders

There is a small airport somewhere in between Zell am See and Kaprun towns. You will be able to see this airport during hiking when you are walking along the path next to the Areitbahn cablecar. There are small planes and gliders frequently taking off and landing at the airport, and you can see these planes and gliders flying near to the mountain.

  • Views of the Austrian Alps

When you are walking along the Areitbahn cablecar route from the Areitalm restaurant down the slope, you may be able to see the beautiful scenery of the Austrian Alps of the Hohe Tauern National Park on a clear day, including Grossglockner, the highest mountain in Austria.More information of Grossglockner and the Hohe Tauern National Park are at my...

  • Ponds on the mountain

If you are hiking in Schmittenhohe, you will discover that there are two ponds on the mountain. One is near to the Glocknerhaus restaurant (see photos) while the other is further up the trail near to the Breiteckalm restaurant. There is a comfortable see-saw at the first lake, as well as some benches for you to sit down and relax.

  • Zell am See (town) and Zeller See (lake)

Zell am See is a cosy and relaxing town located at the foot of Schmittenhohe mountain, next to a beautiful lake called Zeller See. This town will be very crowded with tourists during winter, and the accomodation, food etc will be more expensive during that time. During summer, there are less crowds and it is ideal to visit to experience the charm...

  • Summer and winter

Schmittenhohe is one of the most famous skiing destination in Austria during winter, and the town of Zell am See at the foot of this mountain will be full of tourists during winter. In summer, the mountain is not so crowded and this is an ideal time for people to come here to do some hiking. There are many hiking trails here and they are clearly...

There are several restaurants located at various parts of Schmittenhohe next to the various hiking trails. During my hiking at this mountain, unfortunately they are closed because it is not the peak summer season yet. The various restaurants are at the following locations on the mountain:

    Gasthof Mittelstation
    Schmitten-Pfiff Berghotel
    Pinzgauer Hutte
    Blaickner's Sonnalm

Schmitten Transportation

  • Cable car and ski lifts

There are several cable cars and ski lifts at Schmittenhohe (listed below), and a round trip will cost about $10 euros to $20 euros (children half price). To get your worth, it will be better to get a Combo ticket which allows you to take the cable car or ski lift together with the ship cruise along the Zeller See lake at the bottom of the...

  • Hiking (Part 3)

Here are some more photographs taken during my hiking at Schmittenhohe in June 2007, and more photographs are at the travelogue section of this VT page.Overall, my wife and I enjoyed the hiking trip at Schmittenhohe. If you want to cover all the hiking trails there, I think you will need at least 2-3 days because there are many of them.

  • Hiking (Part 2)

Wear comfortable clothings and shoes during the hiking, and bring sufficient water, sunscreen etc. You can always take a rest when you are tired, remember to take your time to enjoy the experience. During summer, the weather is rather unpredictable and it might rain when you are hiking. Bring along raincoat, the best would be disposable raincoats...

Schmitten Warnings and Dangers

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Schmittenhohe is a very safe mountain to do hiking because the slope is quite gentle, the paths are good with signages, maps are available, many restaurants along the journey etc. However, there are a few minor things you should take note:

    - Start early if you want to hike all the way up to the top, which will take 6-7 hours if you are very slow. Give your sufficient time to reach back to your hotel before sunset. Alternatively, you can take the cablecar or ski lift up and then walk down, or the other way around.
    - Weather can be hot during summer, bring enough water, sunscreen, hats etc.
    - There are benches along the way, stop and take a rest if you are tired. Enjoy the scenery.
    - Beware of vehicles because they do travel up the mountain to the various restaurants.

Schmitten Favorites

  • Trees and wood

Schmittenhohe is a mountain which is heavily forested, with skiing trails forming spider-web designs among the forests. When you are at Schmittenhohe, you will see the beautiful forests along the slopes of the mountain, as well as cut wood being stored at the premises of the various restaurants located on this mountain.

  • Houses & architecture

During hiking at Schmittenhohe, you will see many houses along the slopes of the mountain. This is actually the extension of the town of Zell am See located at the foot of the mountain. The architecture of the houses are traditional Austrian, made up of wood and concrete. If you are interested in Zell am See, please visit my VT Zell am See page for...

  • Signages and hiking trails

The signatures along the various hiking trails (see photo) really helped us a lot, together with a map which you can obtain from your hotel if you decide to come. There are plenty of good hiking trails here, and each is designated with a number on the map. Choose the ones which are within your physical capabilities, and you can take the several...
