There is a brand-new lift taking the tourists up to the castle Werfen the easy way from the large parking along the main-road to Salzburg. It is operated automatically, you have to put in the ticket, the door will open, and when-ever a few people are in the cabin, the lift will start. Total capacity is around 10 or 12 people.
When you want to go down again, and there is no lift,
press the button and CALL FOR IT !!
Of course you may just as well walk up to the castle, the walk is about 10-15 minutes through the woods, partly asphalted but quite un-even still at many places.

Good news for handicapped tourists:
A wheelchair-lift will take you from the end of the funicular into the 1st court, where you may at least see the great architecture there, and may use the restaurant and restrooms. Also the castle-kitchen, Karl-Room and Chamber of the guards are easy accesible for you.
The guided tour , the casemattes and the falcons will be impossible for you.
In order to see the falcons you need really strong helpers to push your wheel-chair coming from the lower castle-entrance, BUT that path is quite steep !!

When you leave the train station, cross the bridge and follow the path on the right side of the road with the small sign saying "Bus to Ice Caves". This will take you to the minibus stop, which will take you 5 km up the mountain (5,90 euro roundtrip). There is a 20-minute walk uphill to the cable car (15 euro roundtrip including entrance to caves), and an additional 25-minute walk uphill (up 600 m elevation) to the entrance of the caves.

To save time and trouble, I chose an organized bus tour. I forgot the name of the tour. I'll look for it. It was not cheap though, around 60 euros (Sept, 2004). It's got a hotel pick-up, and it leaves from Salzburg around noon and comes back around 6 or 7 pm. I was happy with it.

We picked up our rental car in Munich. Thanks to a VT member, I had gone to Via Michelin city maps and had my handy dandy printout. A1 to A10 - no problems. In contrast some wedding guests were in a back -up due to an accident on the highway. But driving on the main highways was quite easy. Just do your research on road signs before you depart.
By car:
Arriving from the north: via the A 10 Tauern Autobahn, take the Pass Lueg or Werfen exit.
Arriving from the south: take the Pfarrwerfen/Werfen exit off the autobahn

The cable car transports visitors from 1000m up to 1575m in 3 minutes.
There is another 20-minute walk after the cable car to the mouth of the caves, which are at an altitude of 1641m.
