Elisabethkapelle was built in the year 1905 on top of Schmittenhoehe, in a hight of about 2000m above sealevel, in order to memorize empress Sisi. You can enter this chapel freely and without restrictions during the day and will find a nice interior in a combination of Art Nouveau and traditional style.
This chapel is just a few meters from the station of Schmittenhoehe.

Closeby Zell am See you will find Kaprun with this interesting, old castle. Unfortunately I came out of the opening-times, but at least I could walk around the castle on a small path, there are a lot of carparking-spaces as well and there was also a place in the wall where I could take a sneak into the innercourt, (my 4th photo)

This is the townhall / the Rathaus of Zell am See and it looks a bit like an old castle with some nice baywindows and small towers at each corner. You will find this building in the centre of the village, along the mainroad, in the area where the street towards the cablecar for Schmittenhoehe is situated.

Schloss Prielau is a lovely castle in the north of Zell am See and it is mainly used as a hotel and restaurant nowadays. I went there and had a look around, also the interior is very interesting and the garden-restaurant is a great place to relax far away from the trafic noises.
In the backyard of that hotel there is also an interesting, old church, see it in my 2nd and 3rd photos.
It was interesting for me to learn that this palace is owned by the Porsche-family and the hotelguests can use the hotel's own Porsche Cayenne in wintertime and a Porsche Boxter in summertime !

Krimmler Wasserfaelle are a great halfday-excursion from Zell am See. They are the highest waterfalls in Austria. It needs a lot of walking uphill and downhill for quite some time in order to see at least a small part of these gigantic waterfalls. You will mostly see just a small part of it and in order to see all of the many cascades at the same time in your photos you have to step up one of the mountains opposite of the falls or even better : take an airplane (e.g. from Zell am See).
Nevertheless it is worth to step up at least to the 2nd viewpoint, the view from there is excellent, but the haze of the water is sometimes taken to the viewpoint by the wind, so take care of your camera and a rain-gear is never really wrong at these waterfalls, even in bright sunshine !
----------------------------------------
Krimml is quite easy to drive to, when you are coming from Zell am See and Mittersill, the road is also quite scenic.
By public transportation you can take the Bus #670 from Zell am See, it starts in front of the train-station and it also is a ÖBB-bus, so it will be included in your train-passes.
The ride from Zell am See to the village of Krimml takes 75 minutes and the station of the bus is rather close to the entrance of the Krimmler Wasserfaelle.

Vötter's Fahrzeugmuseum Kaprun is an interesting carmuseum inside the hotel Sport-Kristall. The museum shows about 150 cars and every small bit of the museum is crammed with a car. You will find a lot of cars that you remember from a long time ago, these are are not "shining" like in other museums, but they rather look like to be in a private garage, waiting to be repaired or so.
I really enjoyed this place, it is just a pity that some of the most precious cars you almost cannot take a photo of, because they are hidden behind many other cars.
The museum is open daily
10.00am - 06.00pm
It is not easy to find this museum, except that you drive through the village of Kaprun in direction to the castle and stop at the Hotel Sport-Kristall, that also has an ancient train of the emperor standing in its frontyard.

Sigmund-Klamm is an interesting sight that you really should not miss when coming to Kaprun and Zell am See. It is an easy walk and you have to pay some small entrance-fee before you will be able to walk over and along a fresh mountain-stream making its way through the rocks. At the end of the Sigmund-Klamm you can decide, whether you go back all the way that you came through the Klamm or you might take another path through the woods as well.
The total walkingtime from the carpark through the Klamm and back will be around 1,5 hours.
Sigmundklamm is open for visitors:
from end of May till end of September
daily from 09.00am-05.0pm
entrancefee was 3,30 euros in 2009

The Zell an See airport is just south of the town . On a sunny October day , a trip to the airprt could be considered to watch
airplanes/gliders land and take off .
The alpine scenery makes a beautiful backdrop for glider watching .
