    Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse

This high alpine road leads to some of the world's most fantastic unspoilt scener in "the Hohe Tauern" National Park. You can see all the climatic and vegetation zones from Austria through the Arctic - meadows, forests, alpine pastures, rocks and ice. At your destination you face the highest mountain in Austria- the "Grossglockner" (3,798m) and you are high above the "Pasterzengletscher", a glacier described as a unique natural wonder.

That's what the brochure says and I couldn't say it better. I've been here several times now maybe 6 or 7 times and everytime I get here I still discover new things to see and enjoy.

If you're here it is a must see! Only problem is you need a day with nice weather to really enjoy the views etc.

    More on Grossglockner to come!

    Schmittenhhe

The Schmittenhöhe is Zell am See's so called Home Mountain. There is a funicular going up to a wonderful hiking area. One of them is the famous Pinzgau Hike. A hike of a few days in the area of Hohe Tauern National Park. Great views etc.

The hike seems to be not difficult but only long. Before you do this one you need to prepair yourself.

An easier walk is the one called: Höhenpromenade adventure trail

This walk brings you down to the Valley Station from the Schmittenhöhebahn.

    Rides
    Adults up & down € 19,60
    Children up & down € 9,80

    Grossglocker!

by Kettleman Written Jun 2, 2005

If you base yourself in Zell, there are many things to do locally and to do with the lake... plus walking on the hills.

But you can also get out and if you are a biker, take a run across the Grossglockner Hoch Alpen Strasse.

I chose to take a 25 year old bike over it and at the end of May when the roads have been cleared but there is a lot of snow.

The views are fantastic but hard work on an old bike!

On the top of the Schmittenhöhe - at 2000 meters altitude - there is the wooden Elisabethkapelle, built in 1904/05 in the memory of Empress Elizabeth - better known in Austria as Sissy.

We had some time to kill before our train would leave, so we decided to rent a pedal boat for 30 minutes. It turned out to be a great idea, but also quite exhausting.
