Zell am see does have it's own railway station but you have to go via Salzburg to get anywhere else, which, adds time. However if you are planning a trip to this lovely town anc need public transport then let the train take the strain.

The postbus is the best way to visit nearby towns and attractions, and the main bus stop is conveniently located just across the road to the train station of the town. As for the prices and schedules, you can visit the postbus website below or you can obtain the bus brochures at your hotel in Zell Am See. The main postbus numbers you should be aware are:

Bus no. 651 - To Grossglockner Alpine Road (once per day, limited to summer season only)
Bus no. 670 - To Krimml Waterfalls (about 1 bus every hour)
Bus no. 661 - To Schmittenhohe cable car station (very frequent)

Ship ride on Zeller See lake is a comfortable and relaxing way to admire the beautiful scenery of Zell Am See and surrounding areas. The ships are comfortable and frequent, more information about the timings and costs of the ship ride are in the webpage below. The adult fare of the ship ride is $8.70 euros and children $4.35 euros, and it will be cheaper if you were to buy a combo ticket of the ship ride plus a cable car or ski-lift ride up to the Schmittenhohe mountain (see my VT Schmitten page) - cost between $16 euros to $27 euros per adult depending on which cable car or ski-lift you are taking (children half price, those born between 1992 to 2001 in 2007).

Zell Am See to Innsbruck and Venice (Italy)

If you want to get to Innsbruck and/or Venice from Zell Am See, the best way would be to take the train. You should take the Austrian OBB train from Zell Am See to Worgl, then take the Trenitalia train (I think it is Eurostar, Munich to Venice) from Worgl to Venice, passing by Innsbruck along the way. For the latter train, a seat reservation is necessary because it is an international intercity train of Europe.

The scenery of the train journey is breathtaking, you can see the photos at the travelogue section of this VT page.

If you intend to travel by train often, then you should really get the Eurail Pass which can save you lots of money instead of buying point-to-point tickets as transportation in Austria is expensive. The Eurail website is at http://www.eurail.com/

The best way to go to Zell Am See is perhaps by trains of the OBB railway (see website below). OBB is the national railway company of Austria, and there are many trains going from Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and other major Austria cities to Zell Am See. My wife and I took the OBB train from Salzburg to Zell Am See and it takes about 1 hour. When we left, we took the OBB train from Zell Am See to Worgl. The OBB trains are generally clean, comfortable and usually arrive on time.

Hiking is one of the best ways to explore Zell Am See and its surroundings. There is a well paved hiking path which runs along the entire Zeller See lake (see photos), which is very nice to walk as it is on flat ground and no climbing is required. The Zeller See lake is not very big and the entire journey will take about 3 hours. If you want more challenging hikes, there are many routes going up to the Schmittenhohe mountain next to Zell Am See. You can visit the webpage below for more information and also my VT Schmitten page.

If you need to take a taxi/cab at Zell Am See, there will be some taxis waiting at the train station when you arrive via train. I think the taxis will be expensive and you should only take them if you need to get to other town, have heavy luggages and/or there are a few people travelling to share the costs. The town of Zell Am See is small and you can usually get to your destination by walking. If there are Postbus buses going to the town, you can take the buses because they are comfortable and convenient.

Zell Am See is one the locations in Austria where you can see lots of visitors come via motorcycles. In fact, there are many motorcycle groups who like to visit the area around Zell Am See because of the beautiful scenery. This include Zell Am See itself, and nearby attractions such as the Grossglockner Road (see my VT Grossglockner page) and Krimml Waterfalls (see my VT Krimml page).

The road conditions here are very good, so it should be no problem for motorcyclists except for the weather (it is very cold up in the mountains and during winter).

Boating and yachting are good ways to explore the Zeller See, and you can see many boats and yacht sailings along the lake.

    Free ski bus

  • I did not take a picture of it, but in Zell am See you have a free bus to take you from the hotel to the cable car. The bus route is available in the official brochure. You identify the closest station from your hotel and the schedule, which is respected carefully, so you can plan when to stand up from the breakfast table and when to leave the hotel in order to reach the bus stop just minutes before it arrives. Anyway in the morning the bus comes at 15 minutes interval. Oh, the bus is free only for people with ski equipment on, so not for casual dressed tourists.
