In Herrengasse, the main street in Graz you will see this building : the famous " Landhaus " - built for the administration of the country - and it is built in the special Renaissance-style already influenced a lot by italian architecture.

The chimes / Glockenspiel is one of the highlights in Graz and you may see busloads of people waiting there at certain times.

Glockenspielplatz is situated in the old centre of town, and since more than 100 years the top windows of that little tower will open and you may watch a dancing couple in traditional costumes dancing to the music of the chimes...

There are 3 performances every day :
at 11.00 a.m. + 03.00 p.m. + 06.00 p.m.
each performance takes about 5 minutes !
BUT when you have seen the 1st minute, you have seen it all....

Herzoghof in Herrengasse

"Herzoghof" is the name of the building that has certainly one of the most beautiful facades in Herrengasse ! Just click on my picture in order to see the fine details of the frescos that actually cover all of the building.

Herzoghof is in Herrengasse Nr. 3, opposite and just a few meters from the Hauptplatz / main-square and the Rathaus.

Hofbäckerei Edegger Tax and the golden royal eagle on top of the entrance-gate - that is certainly the most beautiful of all shop-facades in Graz. When you enlarge my picture, you may see some of the fine wooden decorations and inlaids.

look for the great ornaments and woodcarvings - also from inside the shop is worth a visit - it is still a bakery and confectionary and a great place to relax, when exploring Graz.

Hofbäckerei Edegger Tax is a tradtional bakery and confectionary in Graz / Hofgasse where you may taste the famous "Sissi-Busserl" and "Kaiser-Zwieback"

Don't miss this great traditional bakery - HOFbäckerei is a title only those merchants , backeries etc. were allowed to use, that were delivering their goods to the royal court, and of course the taste of the emperor was a certain guarantee for perfect goods and service !

In "Landeszeughaus" , next to the Landhaus you will find one of the biggest collections of medieval arms and iron-armories in the whole world ! And the most interesting about this museum is the fact, that the Zeughaus still looks the same as hundreds of years ago and has hundreds of swords, rifles, guns, helebards etc.
You could actually equip an army of several hundred men with these weapons !

Inside this museum you will find all sorts of weapons of several centuries - even an iron-armory for a horse...

My picture was taken in 2003 - when getting there in 2005 you should be prepared that a big part of the arcades of Landhaus are covered by a large cloth, because the facade is under restoration at the moment.

on the 4th floor of Landeszeughaus you may take a pic through the last window - and will have a perfect view into the court...
.
But also the " Waffenkammer " = Armory chamber is an absolutely MUST !!! - It is one of the biggest collection of medieval arms and armours, you would be able to equip an army of several hundred people with these old weapons !

The " Rathaus " - the townhall

On Hauptplatz (the main-square of Graz) you will see the monument for Erzherzog Johann - it is a great place to sit on the steps of the monument and relax a bit, when exploring the city of Graz. Next to the monument you will see plenty of small food-stands with a large variety of food and drinks.

On Rathausplatz you will see the lovely townhall - have a closer look for the fassade with so plenty of small balconies and great sculptures.
The Rathaus is also perfectely lighted at night !

Schloss Eggenberg in Graz

Schloss Eggenberg is the most beautiful palace in Graz. It dates back to the year 1623 and the 4 seasons are symbolized by the 4 towers, 12 gates were built because of the 12 months and 365 windows are in the building.
The architect was Pietro de Pomis, a pupil of Palladio
The interior of the palace is really wonderful with precious stucco-works, frescos, paintings and chandeliers.

A visit in Eggenburg is a Must, including the guided tour,
that will be held daily except mondays at
10.00 + 11.00 +12.00p.m. & 02.00 + 03.00 + 04.00p.m.

Sporgasse Nr.3 - a great
facade

Sporgasse Nr.3 might be another highlight for all fans of a great facade in Art-Nouveau-style. Opposite of this building you will find 2 lovely garden-cafes facing this facade !

Sporgasse is a small street going up the hill from Rathausplatz - this house is on the left just a few steps from Rathausplatz - and as the street is rather narrow there, you may easily miss it...
and when you come in the afternoon, you might have the sun shining directely on the ornaments !
Also at night this facade is perfectely lighted !
