whenever walking through town, have a look for innercourts, whenever you find an open door - this style in architecture reminds me a lot of the courts of my hometown Steyr ( no wonder - Steiermark used to belong to Steyr and many architects simply might have copied the medieval houses of the "hometown" Steyr... The Landhaus in Graz with these great arcades reminds me a lot of the great italian architecture of the Renaissance.
You may enter this court freely and without restrictions - no admission charge - maybe they close the gates at night - but during the day you may walk inside.... . ...unfortunately all stairs going to the top of the arcades will be locked - but I found a great place to take a pic of the whole innercourt... - from the 4th floor of the " Landeszeughaus " ! During my visit in june 2005 ALL of this facade was covered because of construction-works - I could not find out how long this will take ! Leave a Comment

The Opera of Graz was built by the famous Viennese architects Helmer & Fellner (well known for many buildings along the Wiener Ringstrasse like the Oper, Burgtheater, Votivkirche etc.) The building is beautifully lighted at night !
The opera of Graz is just a few steps outside the historic centre, surrounded by a nice park and next to it you may see a giant modern sculpture : "Lichtschwert" is the name of it (sword of light). Behind the opera you will find the so-called Kaiser-Josef-Markt, a market with local culinary delights, from Monday till Friday . Leave a Comment

The Uhrturm is the most famous sight of Graz and you may see it from many places all over the city.
At first this tower was part of the fortification and got it's characteristic clock and the wooden balconies not before the year 1712. When you click on my picture you may see a small bell as well - it dates back to the year 1382. you may not enter the tower - but will have a great terrace around it and on a sunny day plenty of people have a walk up there simply in order to relax and enjoy the view. You will NOT hear any noises at all from the busy town beneath !! Leave a Comment

The castle of Graz in Hofgasse Nr. 15 does not look very special today, BUT it makes sense to take a closer look at the doubble spiral staircase. It is certainly the best to combine a visit at the castle with the Dom (cathedral) and with the interesting Mausoleum.
The Burg of Graz houses administrative offices today, but you may enter there freely and without restrictions during the day and walk into that small tower in order to see the double-spiral-staircase of 1499. Leave a Comment

This doubble-spiral staircase dates back to the year 1499 and you may walk there freely and without restrictions during the day. In order to take such a picture you will need a wide-angle-lens with 20mm or even less !
This is the most funny staircase I have ever seen - 2 spirals meeting each other always again on each floor and going each others ways again and meeting again... Leave a Comment

This lovely facade is the building next to the famous chimes on Glockenspielplatz. It has a beautiful facade with great mosaiques and a lovely roof .
In both of the lovely houses on Glockenspielplatz you will have restaurants and cafes and in summer they also have a garden restaurant, where you may watch the Glockenspiel: 1) Cafe Glockenspiel - under the chimes 2) Glöckl Bräu - in the other building Leave a Comment

This small square, called Schlossbergplatz, is about 200 meters from Hauptplatz and at the end of Schlossbergplatz you may see the small gate for the lift taking you up to the Schlossberg. In Contradiction to many brochures, the lift is NOT included in the day-tickets of the buses and trams. The fee is 0,50 Euros for each ride !
there are different possibilities to go on top of the Schloßberg - one of them is this wonderful staircase that will take you directely to the Uhrturm - and when walking up the stairs you will realize that is was impossible for enemies to get up the hill at this side of the mountain (before these steps were made) click on the pic to see the beautiful structure of the stairs, that were built during WW II - and are therefore called "Krieg-steig" (war-stairs) Leave a Comment
