Schloss Eggenberg is such an interesting palace and it is even in a walking-distance of about 20-25 minutes from the Hauptbahnhof. You may take the tram #1 as well, but from the station "Schloss Eggenberg" you have to walk again 5-10 minutes in order to get to the castle.

The door of the castle-park will be locked at night !!

You may walk around the park of Eggenberg palace / Schloss Eggenberg on your own, freely and without restrictions during the day, BUT in order to see the interior of that beautiful palace, you have to take a GUIDED tour !!
That way you have to calculate about 3-4 hours for Eggenberg palace & its gardens !!
    A-8020 Graz - Eggenberger Allee 90
    The palace is open : April 30th-October 31st, 2005
    Tuesday-Sunday 10.00a.m. - 05.00p.m.
Guided tours are 6 Euros (4,50 € for groups)
    Tours are at 10.00, 11.00, 12.00a.m., 02.00, 03.00+04.00p.m
Photography inside the palace is NO problem !!

Graz is quite a small city and most of the attractions for tourists are in the very centre of town.
From the train-station " Graz Hauptbahnhof" you may take the trams #1, 3, 6, or 7 and will be at the Hauptplatz within 7-10 minutes.
There you may first take a look at the townhall, the Landhaus and Landeszeughaus.
Take the small street opposite of Landhaus and you will get to Glockenspielplatz with the chimes & plenty of restaurants in the so-called "Bermuda-triangle"
You may continue walking through Färbergasse to Sporgasse, turn to the right and get to Hofgasse , see the Hofbäckerei and walk to Burg, Dom and Mausoleum
Walk back to Sporgasse and walk down to Hauptplatz again...
Such a walk could be done easily during a short stop-over of 2 hours !

Another possibility to explore Graz from Hauptplatz is to walk Sackstrasse and go to the Lift im Berg - go up Schlossberg and see the Uhrturm.
Also the Murinsel is just about 400 meters from the Hauptplatz.

On my picture : Schloss Eggenberg - it is into the other direction from the train-station, but you certainly need about 2 hours to get there, as the park is quite large and in a big distance to the trams.

Concrete Art is a Cultural Capital project, a series of monumental sculptures made of concrete. This is my favourite object, it looks like an abstract Christmas tree for me (the glass globes contain all kinds of horses). It stands in front of the Minorite church (Mariahilferstrasse) (probably only until the end of 2003).

In the old town, and particularly around the Hauptplatz, there are beautifully decorated buildings.

The house in the middle (at the corner of the Hauptplatz and the Sporgasse) is called Luegg. It comes from the phrase "ums Eck lugen", meaning to peek around the corner. It's has been a busy spot since the 13th century.

See the beautiful Rathaus, the Town Hall of Graz, which is situated in the Rathausplatz, The Town Hall Square. Rathaus is very huge building which occupies waste area of the very heart of the city.

By the time I have visited Graz the whole area around the Rathausplatz was under major reconstruction works.

Glockenspieleplatz is small but very pitoresque city square, in my opinion, it is the most beautiful part in whole of the town of Graz. Many tourists visit it because of the famous carillon, a must see when in town, many others because of the oldest Grazer brewery which stands right next to it. It looks in particularly attractive during the night, as you can see on my pictures.

    Kunsthaus

As Graz is this year's Cultural Capital, there is a lot of new development in the city, one more exciting than the other. I describe all my favourites - the Kunsthaus, the Island on the Mur, the Clock Tower Shadow and the Mary Lift - among the "Must see" places, but I must add that I admire the city of Graz for all these constructions and I wish we had at least one thing similarly breathtaking and/or funny in Budapest.

Still, Graz always managed to maintain a youthful feel - not that you would expect anything else in a city where nearly one person in five is a student. The oldest university dates back to 1585 and, when surrounded by its red-tiled roofs, you could be forgiven for thinking for a moment that you'd stumbled across a tiny Toulouse. If they didn't all speak German and such very good English, of course.

This is a beautifully designed and unique bridge to cross the river. From far, I thought it's a museum. It is accessible for the disabled cos there's a lift.

In the middle of the bridge, there's a small theatre made from steel and it's free. Oh, the Mur-Insel, is like a ship which can rise and sink with the water level.
