Congregate in the city's parks, like Stadtpark, or in the Schillerplatz, for the ten days or so running up to Christmas. They have devised good wooden lattice supports to keep the trees upright. Rather romantic, in the run-up to the holiday week at home. Prices vary between 30-45 euros.

On the top of the hill, above Ehrenhausen, is a Baroque castle of Rupprecht von Eggenberg (1546-1611), who was a member of famous Styrian family and highly recpected Austrian colonel-general. He was appreciated for his military skills and hero of the Ottoman wars, known in particularly for the Battle of Sisak (town in Croatia) in 1593 and the victory over the Turks. The castle was designed by the Graz court architect Giovanni Pietro de Pomis.
A group of Styrian grape growers purchased the historical wine cellar of the Ehrenhausen castle in 1916, and the grapes are still processed there today.

See the parish church built from 1752-1755 in the late Baroque style. Inside of the parish church you can see Pieta from early 15th century. We usually do not expect to see 15th century paintings in such a small village as Ehrenhausen is But then, isn't it the one of the reason why we all do travel to unknown destinations?

The small village of Ehrenhausen is a must see when visiting Styria. It is situated near the town of Leibnitz in Southern Styria. Ehrenhausen is a starting point of the South Styria Vine Road. There are a beautiful late Baroque parish church (1752-1755), with Pieta from early 15th century and Mausoleum of Rupprecht von Eggenberg.

Ehrenhausen is small village in the southern part of Austria and perfect place for a day trip while staying at Graz. If taking highway it's around one hour of drive from the city.
By the time I was visiting Ehrenhausen there was Mercedes oldtimers parade and I made this picture by chance. Oldtimer parade is traditional, every August if I still remember well, gathering Mercedes fans from whole of Europe.

To be honest I dont like much the undergound tunnels and narrow corridors, feeling very uncomfortable if have to pass by. The feeling comes from my childhood when I was exploring an underground hole and was almost stucked inside.
Anyway, there is a small underground train looking very much alike to those trains in the coal mines for exploring network of tunnels inside the Castle hill.

This is the interior of an interesting museum called "Neue Galerie"in the very centre of Graz, and even when you are not at all interested in the quite frequently changing exhibitions, this Gallery might be of interest for you, as it has a unique baroque staircase and a really beautiful fresco on top of these stairs.
Just enter the house, NO need at all to care about the ticket-box next to the entrance, the exhibitions are on 1st and 2nd floor and the stair-case may be entered freely and without restrictions during the day !! - You will need an extra-wideange-lense in order to get a picture of that rather narrow staircase.
The adress of the gallery is A-8010 Graz - Sackgasse 16
It is the street leading from Hauptplatz to Kriegsteig.
The exhibitions of the museum in Neue Galerie are open :
Tuesday-Sunday 10.00a.m. - 06.00p.m., thursday untill 08.00p.m.

Stift Rein / Rein monastery is in a distance of 18km north of Graz and it makes certainly a great day-excursion, maybe in connection with the pilgrim-church in Strassengel and the open-air-museum in Stübing !
Stift Rein is the oldest Zistersienser-monastery in the world, dating back to the year 1129. It is a boarding school today and well known for the beautiful interior of its basilica, the library and a few beautifully decorated rooms inside the monastery. You may enter the basilica freely and without restrictions, BUT all the rest of the monastery may be visited only by a guided tour - mostly at 11.30a.m. - BUT you better check in advance with the telephone-number indicated below !
In order to get to A-8103 Rein, take the
private "Watzke-bus" Nr.110 / 111 / 120 leaving at Lendplatz in Graz
and leave the bus at Rein-Gemeindeamt !
You may get there by your own car - 18km north of the city of Graz !

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Graz and became famous in the US as a body builder and actor. He is a citizen of honour of Graz and the city's new stadium was named after him as well. As he was elected governor of California on 7th October 2003, the Museum showing his early career will probably attract even more interest.
The Arnold Schwarzenegger Museum is located in the Fitness Center Fitnessparadies, at Stadionplatz 1.

... 'organic' architecture is sprouting in city and it's please for an eye and heart to see it: on our walk to the city we found that little kindergarten (kindergarden) on Ghegagasse, just opposite to student homes to be good example of simple, yet nature friendly project. Grassy roof, wood - and landscaping around the playground makes it merge finely with its immediate environment.
It's not tourist attraction, but it's interesting building to see.
Address: Ghegagasse 14 - Lend district; it's parallel to Keplerstrasse. 20 minutes walk to city centre.
