 | Graz Restaurants | Tips 11 - 20 of 57 | | Popular Restaurants | Other Restaurants Tips | All Tips (57) Wherever I am I try to eat the local food and it happened extremely seldom that I was disappointed and Lothar told me a lot of the great food one can get in Styria. So I was really curious, especially because the dinner we had on our first evening in Styria was cheaper than elsewhere in Austria but of course far from being anything special - but that was because it was the only place open in the forgotten village where we stayed overnight a 100 km north of Graz. Our stroll through Graz the next morning was very intense and rewarding and it was already quite late when we felt the wish for a good lunch. We went down from the Schlossberg and Lothar knows plenty of good restaurants about a kilometer from there but we did not want to take the risk to come too late. After passing the Murinsel we saw an obviously new restaurant at the other side of the Mur river which Lothar has never seen before. The name Opatija indicated that it must be Croatian and on the blackboard outside they offered Branzino. So Lothar could convince me to try this one instead of anything Styrian further away. The restaurant looked clearly more expensive than average.
We studied the menu which was displayed outside and it looked nice and interesting with prices more like in Tirol than in Styria. It was nice and warm so we sat down at the terrace and discussed our choice with the very friendly Croatian staff. They strongly recommended the Branzino which has arrived this morning from the not so far Adriatic Sea. It was of course our main choice. But all the dishes we got were nice and authentically Croatian. I still remember also the great fish soup. We had to wait quite a time for the Branzino so we joked that they have probably sold the last one and called to the Croatian coast to get a new one but finally everything came and we enjoyed a wonderful lunch which left no wish open. And the bill was only about two thirds of that what we would have paid for anything similar in Innsbruck or elsewhere in Tirol. The Cafe Aiola is on the Schlossberg, next to the Clock Tower and it's a very pleasant place with a breathtaking view. I would warmly recommend it to anyone to sit down and have a drink or a meal up there. Sitting is both inside and outside. The coolest thing is that the walls can simply disappear in the ground so the whole place can be opened if the weather is nice.
I only had a latte macchiato, it was good. But it's the location that makes the experience great. Leave a Comment Theme: Eclectic/InternationalComparison: about averageAddress: Schlossberg, next to the Clock TowerDirections: Once you are up, you can't miss itWebsite: http://www.aiola.at

If you cant afford to go to Johan, dont worry!! At the other side of the price scale - and the other side of town - is the Bier Baron. The 110-year-old bier hall is situated next to the university. In Germany, traditional bier halls like this should only sell the local brew. In Köln, the waiters will laugh in your face if you ask for anything other than Kölsch. But the Baron, mercifully, sells 38 different German, Austrian and Czech beers, 12 of them on draft. Local favourites include Puntigammer's Panther and the dark and sweetly sticky Gosser. The grub isn't bad, either. Leave a Comment Theme: Local

Good food is not expensive in Graz. Two courses, wine and coffee in Johan - the city's most fashionable restaurant - will cost around 50 euros: less than London. The Johan is set in the former cold store of the city hall: a long, monastic chamber with a domed roof and a beechwood bar, where groups of smartly dressed Grazers sip tall drinks and eat from big plates decorated with duck, rabbit and veal. The tables and chairs come draped in white cloth. Chimney sweep chic, you might say. Leave a Comment

This nice café is located a 5 minutes walk from the centre and close to the university and the Stadtpark. Maybe I like it that much because I lived in the same street when I was studying in Graz :). It is in an old house, of which only the facade is left, behind they built a completely new building. The interieur is super modern but still cosy. They have very cheap lunch offers (EUR 3,90!)- obvioulsy because of it`s vicinity to the university. Regarding the food I have only tried the tuna focaccia so far, which was rather good. They have a wide breakfast selection as well. Further it is one of the rare places in Graz where you have a WLAN access for free. Staff is very friendly! This restaurant is located close to the Graz`cathedral and serves mainly traditional austrian and styrian food- but with a creative twist. It is nicely furnished in a traditional way. They have an extra room for smokers. I went there quite often in the past 10 years and was never disappointed. Last time I had pasta with a crayfish sauce and a salad with the pumpkin seed oil we styrians love- and it was very good. Prices for main courses are between 10 and 20 EUR. It is a perfect place for a decent dinner with the whole family too. In summer you can sit in their courtyard. In their courtyard goes a stair down to a club called "Royal Garden Jazzclub". If you like Jazz music, this is the place to be in Graz. Leave a Comment

We had a really nice meal in this bar/restaurant near Hauptplatz. I've forgotten the name and exact location of the restaurant I think the restaurant was on Franzis-Kaner platz but I can't remember for certain. We both had a delicious Wiener-Schnitzel with salad, with a couple of beers for me and wine for Ruth all for 22 Euro. Sincerely, I can't tell you any because I never had lunch here. According to the menu it offers the traditional Greek food. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Hofgasse street

This restaurant was recommended to us by the hotel we were staying at, saying they do traditional Austrian food, that was very good. We decided to try it as it looked nice, and also as it was nearing -10C outside, it was nice to get out in the warmth. The restaurant is quite upmarket, so its got a very formal feel to it.
I had a pork dish for supper, which was very very nice and my friend had reindeer, which he also liked very nice. So in general the food we had we enjoyed very very much! I would recommend this if you are after a nice restaurant with a good atmosphere. Leave a Comment
