Eschenlaube: great food - nice place
  • Satisfaction:
  • Here you find soemthing for everyone - from pizza, pasta until food from marokko for example. it is very good and I really like to eat there - even though I have two favorite dishes which I always eat ;)

It´s really close to the center and to the stadtpark - the biggest park in town.

    risotto with chicken or
    spinach spätzle

    Gambrinuskeller: Great Value
  • Satisfaction:
  • This large restaurant has apparently been trading since 1596. I ate here a couple of times on my first stop and found it to be excellant value. There's an exhaustive menu that offers a wide range of food, including Styrian specialities at very reasonable rates and large helpings.
I remember being seated next to an Austrian gentleman on our first time there who had a stall on the Christmas market and had travlled from Northern Austria and it was great to chat and hear what he had been up to. The restaurant is very large and has a couple of rooms to choose from. The ones at the front and side are the better ones. On my last visit there I got stuck in a room to the rear, which wasn't too hot on the decor, so try and keep away from ending up at the back.

I know it was a Styrian dish but I can't remember what it was though. It was a massive helping though. Every time I came out that restaurant I was completely stuffed.

Glockl Brau: Possibly the best tap beer in Graz
  • Satisfaction:
  • Food is pretty good, but I must say the house beer is the best one I sampled in Graz by a long shot! Definitely worth a visit - very relaxing in the daytime for lunch.

    Glocklbrau: Great Styrian restaurant
  • Satisfaction:
  • I really liked the old charm of this place. There is a small bar area with stools at the front of the building to the right of the entrance. The room is wooden panelled and very cosy. Sometimes I would go in there for a quick drink in the evening, even though I wasn't eating there. I ate there a couple of times during the day and there is a seating area to the other side on the ground floor. However, I preferred to eat upstairs. There is a good atmosphere here. Like most of the places in Graz though, not too frantic.

I remember having sauages with horseradish sauce, which I loved. The beer is great as well

Goldene Kugel (prev. Bier Baron II): Hearty Austrian food, top brauhaus
  • Satisfaction:
  • Firstly, we were searching for Bier Baron II - as recommended at various places on the web. However we found Goldene Kugel in its place - We were there, so we thought it was worth a visit anyway.

What can I say - 14 or so tap beers, friendly helpful staff. The barman was happy to give us samples of various drinks before buying. The food was excellent, and really well priced. The location of the bar is little away from the centre of town, but certainly worth the walk. We did notice it was a little quiet that night (saturday), but we were in early in the evening.

You cant go past the Beeg Goulash - sensational!

  • Satisfaction:
  • ...it is a spanish restaurant and very good.
They have a lot of little dishes - cold and hot - so also with little hunger you can go there and have a great meal. Also very good wine and music.

    McDonalds: Are you Irish?
Not really a restaurant tip but more of a story.

There I was in 1993 enjoying my Big Mac and McBeer (awful) chatting away to Helga and her friend when this chap intruded on us with, "Hey are you Irish?" When I said, "Yes" he laughed and said, "Oh IRA". I said, "Yes" and made a gun-shape with my fingers. He stopped smiling, wolfed down his Big Mac and left faster than your insides after a strong laxative.

If you're on a tight budget and a non-existant exercise regime, then there's McDonalds for you. Off you go and indulge...

    McBeer for the first time.

Rubbish taste!! Needed more mayo I think.

No idea - you know I never even thought of looking: What a view
  • Satisfaction:
  • I ate here each time I've been to Graz and in 2004 I took Annemarie to sample it. It was still as lovely as ever. We sat in the afternoon sun drinking beer (Grosser) and both of us had pasta dishes. Very pleasant and I highly (pardon the pun) recommend this beautiful mountain top restaurant.

You have a choice of two ways getting to the top...1 is to walk. This is a good idea if you want to build up your appetite...2 is the mountian train. It climbs at a very steep angle from the bottom of right up to the restaurant. There is a small fee but it's well worth it.

Just watch the fecking bees during the summer!!

Carbonara. Generous helping and very well cooked. Really enjoyable. The view from the table overlooking the Hedgehog and the rest of Graz was amazing.
