    Mary's Column and the Marienlift

    Mary's Column and the Marienlift

The Mariensaule (Mary's Column), topped with a golden statue of Mary, sits in one of the squares in the historic city centre of Graz. During the Cultural Year 2003, a glass elevator created by Graz media artist Richard Kriesche took visitors up to the statue of Mary. For one Euro visitors were raised to eye-level with the statue and experienced a completely new perspective of the city centre.

    Marienlift

This is my favourite Cultural Capital project in Graz, it's so unusual and creative and silly: a glass elevator takes visitors up to the statue of Mary so that they can look at her profile and see the city centre from her perspective. The elevator works with 1 EUR and stays up for one minute.
The lift was created by Richard Kriesche.

This is one of the remains of Graz being European capital of culture 2003. A glass lift going to nowhere, just up in the air. The fare costs 1 EUR. You are going up and the lift stops for 1 minute so that you can enjoy the view over the Herrengasse. The idea of it`s designer was to take humble human beings to the same height as the Mary`s column which is standing next to the lift. If you want to enjoy this experience in Graz you have to be fast, because they sold the lift to the city of Hartberg and it will be removed probably in March.

This lift was another cultular project for Graz. It was designed by Richard Kriesche and the object of is, it to elevate to the same height as the statue of Mary, so you can see her, and then also to have a big of a view of the city.
The ride up costs ?1 and the lift will stay up there for about 1 minute before descending.

    A Square in Graz

I hate to say it, but I don't know the name of this square or any of its history, but I thought it was nice and wanted to include it anyway.

I really liked the gold statue and thought the elevator "to gain a different perspective" was kind of cool.
