 | Graz Transportation | Tips 1 - 10 of 44 | | Popular Transportation | Miscellaneous Transportation Tips | All Tips (44) The so-called "Lift im Berg" (lift inside the mountain) takes you from Schlossbergplatz and Kriegsteig directely to the Uhrturm. In Contrary to some brochures printed by the Graz-tourist-office, this lift is NOT included in the means of transportation of the daytickets of buses and trams (ONLY Schlossbergbahn is included !!) BUT each ride is just 50 cents and takes you easily and quickly to the famous Uhrturm. The small, black Uhrturm that you may see in front of the real one is ment for blind people, who may "see" the construction of the tower by their hands that way. Leave a Comment |

Graz is not really such a very big town and it has a really perfect system of trams and buses. Walking from the train-station to Herrengasse & most of the sights in the centre of Graz is about 25 minutes, so it might make sense to take a tram ! When arriving by car, try to park at one of the many Park & Ride-places and take the tram/bus into the centre. In the city there are plenty of one-way-streets and only a few spaces to park... Ordinary tickets, beeing valid for 1 hour are 1,70 Euros a ticket for 24 hours is 3,40 Euros both of these tickets are for sale at the tram- and bus-drivers and at most newspaper-shops. Tickets for the whole week are 8,20 Euros You may get them at all the Tabak-trafik & newspaper-shops. Always CANCEL your ticket right away !!! Schlossberg-Bahn takes you up to the "Casmatten" - the old part of the fortification - there is a great park and an open-air theatre and plenty of places where you may relax or have a break in various restaurants. The cable-car is quite steep ( 61% ) and it is taking you up to the hight of 427 meters above sea-level. In contrary to the informations in some booklets issued by the city of Graz, the Schlossbergbahn is part of the GVB-Verbund-system and so the daytickets and ordinary bus/tramtickets are valid there as well ! In case that you have a dayticket, you have to get a free ticket from the desk, to open the automatic door of the train. Get into the train as soon as the automatic doors will open, and you may get a seat at the great first row with the best panorama-view !! The Schlossbergbahn-cablecar is working daily from October till May : 10.00a.m.-10.00p.m. and from june till september 09.00a.m.-11.00p.m. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home |

Marien-Lift is one of the strangest art-projects in Graz. The sculpture of Virgin Mary stands at the beginning of Herrengasse and it may see this main-shopping-street from a different angle for hundreds of years already. The idea of the art-project is that Marienlift gives also ordinary people the possibility to see that street in the same way and shifts as the statue of Mary. Thats all !!! You may insert 1 Euro and the lift gets up, stays there for 1 minute and goes down again. It was built recently and in my opinion it is quite a waste of money at a time, when cities like Graz & Vienna do not have enough money to build a lift for handicapped people at all of the Metro-stations, BUT they have money for such a non-sense !! When driving to Graz it might be interesting for you to know that there is an extra-long tunnel under the centre of Graz : Blabutschtunnel is 9,9 km long and driving through such a tunnel might be a nightmere for some drivers, and it could be extremely dangerous and tireding.... You may as well avoid the tunnel and drive through the centre of Graz. The speed-limit inside the tunnel is 100 km/h and both directions have a different tube with 2 tracks each. The tunnel is free of extra-charge, BUT you need the "Autobahn-Vignette " of course !! There are lots of mountains all over Steiermark / Styria and many of the roads have tunnels : A9 / Pyhrnautobahn is the highway from Wels to Graz and it has 2 tunnels, where you have to pay an extra fee : South of Spital/Pyhrn: Bosrucktunnel - 5,5 Km - 5,50 Euros South of St.Michael: Gleinalmtunnel - 8,5 km - 7,50 Euros Blabutschtunnel is with 9,9km the longest, but free of charge ! There are several possibilities to get on top of the Schloßberg - one of them is this wonderful staircase that will take you directely to the Uhrturm - and when walking up the stairs you will realize that is was impossible for enemies in the ancient times to get up the hill at this side of the mountain (before these steps were made) click on the pic to see the beautiful structure of the stairs, that were built during WW II - and are therefore called "Krieg-steig" (war-stairs) The small square at the foot of the Kriegsteig is called Schlossbergplatz, and it is about 200 meters from Hauptplatz and next to the spot, where the stairs start, you may see also the small gate for the lift taking you up to the Schlossberg. Everyone that arrived to the Graz train station during Graz 2003 were greeted by a striking visual transformation of the station's ceiling by Peter Kogler. His intention was to the walls of the train station hall into three-dimensional objects. Kogler covered 2,355 square meters of wall space with synthetic ink jet designs. Computer-generated biomorphous grey, black and white forms on red background wobble on the ceiling and the walls – due to the great plasticity of the design, the »wallpapered« hall seems to be padded. Kogler does not generate his forms geometrically but casts them virtually – like three-dimensional liquids – into the two-dimensional picture frame which appears to explode. All trains arrive here and public transport is readily available (buses and trams) from here. Leave a Comment |
The airport Graz Thalerhof is at 12 km from the city center. There are connections to all major airports with AUA, Lufthansa, swiss ... and one daily ryanair flight from/to London. From the airport you can take a bus, a train (both €1,7) or a taxi to the city center. Bus timetable: http://www.verbundlinie.at/busbahnbim-auskunft/pdf/j05/stv_39630h_j05.pdf Rail timetable: www.oebb.at (von: Graz Flughafen nach: Graz). The train station is at about 500 meters from the airport, so that it's better to take the bus or taxi if it's raining or you have a lot of luggage. Leave a Comment |
Parking in Graz is maybe the most difficult and expensive one among all Austrian cities. Therefore I suggest to leave the car far ouside the centre and to use the Public Transport (tram and bus). In the centre you find almost all interesting sights in walking distance. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus |
