It is difficult to find a nice restaurant with a bit of an atmosphere in the very centre of Judenburg- and in my opinion this is the only one. It is located a bit hidden in a narrow street at the old city wall, in a small old two-storied building. It is nicely decorated, with a lot of wood and old wine casks. They serve the usual italian dishes, that is pizza and pasta. Quality of food is unfortunately not constant, therefore i give only 3 of 5 satisfaction points. They are open every day till midnight.
Favorite Dish: Pizza siciliana and the minestrone (perfect)
More hearty portions and local fayre available here. As with Gruber, the food is reasonably priced and the portions plentiful - with a wide range of Styrian dishes. They have a range of local wines and beer on tap to accompany the food.
Favorite Dish: The salads and the desserts are from memory not to be overlooked!
I used to go to Café Gruber on a weekly basis (at least - sometimes I was in there nearly every day!) when I lived in Judenburg in 1997/98 and used to enjoy their Styrian cookery - all freshly prepared. Last year I returned - it was hardly as though I had been away - the owner still recognised me - and was as welcoming as ever. As a social hub for locals it was a very warming and fun place - a broad split of generations and always busy but not over-crowded, and with a mean glass of beer on tap.
Favorite Dish: From a toasted sandwich to a three course meal, I never had a bad meal at Gruber. Their dessert menu in particular is not to be passed over.
