City tower and Planetarium
It is Judenburg`s landmark, built in venetian style. As the church St. Nikolaus has no own spire (or better, it has a small one, but without bells), it is it`s bell tower. In November 2006 they opened a Planetarium on the top of the tower. They show short three-dimensional films, like "Ursprung des Lebens" (origins of life), "Entdeckung des Weltalls" (discovery of the universe) or the "Pink Floyd music show" of about 30 min lenght there too. They reccomend to reserve tickets for these shows and actually it was almost sold out when I went there, so following their advice might be a good idea. I saw the "origins of life" film and found it very interesting. You lie more than you sit in very comfortable chairs and watch the film projected on kind of a cupola roof. After the film, they show and explain you star constellations. The entrance for adults costs EUR 9. You can either take the new glass lift, passing the church bells and ancient stone walls to go up, or climb the about 250 steps. If you happen to be in Judenburg it is definitely worth a visit, I was fascinated by the construction.
Former Jesuitenkloster/Jesuit`s monastery
The building used to be an Augustinian hermits cloister, but was then donated to Jesuits who opened a school there to teach mainly Latin. From the 18th century on it was used as military barracks. Now you can find the youth hostel and the hotel "Zum Sternengucker" there. The interesting thing to see in the building is especially the baroque staircase with nice frescoes on the walls. Just follow the signs to the "Ulrich von Liechtenstein-Musikschule" (the music school)- the staircase is right there. The attached former jesuit`s church was first transformed into a cinema (!) in the previous century and is now a convention and event centre.
Head up the Stadtturm
The Stadtturm contains an exhibition about Judenburg's past - having been built in the 15th century. There are glorious views across Aichfeld and into the Murtal, and the views on a clear day allow you to see mountains and forests. It is only a stone's through from the Hauptplatz (the town's main square). Admission is cheap and the view worth the climb up the steps.
