 | Mariazell Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 29 | | The Basilica dominated the small town, Mariazell. This church was founded in 1157 by the monk Magnus. In the year 1200, began the construction works at a Romanesque church. In 1340 a Gothic choir was added to the church. In 1342 the Duke Albrecht donated an altar of the Virgin Mary for it. From 1380 to 1396 the church was changed into a Gothic church under the order of King Louis of Hungary. Some parts from this period of time can be seen: the pointed middle tower and some details of the Gnadenkapelle. In the 17th century, the increase of the numbers of pilgrims made an extension of the small church necessary. The famous constructor Domenico Sciassia started in 1644 to expand the church in Baroque style. Leave a Comment

One cannot talk about Mariazell without saying something about the basilica. That is the most important tourist attraction in the town. It is a piece of jewellery that impresses, with its slim and fashionable line, its brightness, its splendid architecture, its marble embroideries, and its valuable treasures. The church was erected in several styles. The beginning of the church in the year 1157 was in the Romance style. From 1340, began the construction of the Gothic church. The construction works to the modern basilica, in the baroque style, began in the year 1644. The famous master builder Domenico Sciassia created with it, one of the first church big constructions of the Austrian baroque. The church was named, in the year 1907, as papal basilica.

Do not miss to take a closer look at the lovely facade of Hotel Goldener Löwe / Konditorei Pirker, directely opposite of the basilika on main-square. It was one of the topics that we had learned in hotel-managment-school : a hotel next to a pilgrim-church will never have a low or high season like other places with winter- and summertourists, but the tourists come on a regular basis all year long and unless you start to throw your money out of the window, you may live a good life by these tourists. this is one of the reasons, why all the hotels in Mariazell are so perfectely well maintained... Leave a Comment Address: A-8630 Mariazell - Grazerstrasse 10Directions: Hotel Goldener Löwe is opposite of the Basilika at the higher end of the main-square.

Mariazeller-Bahn is a side-line of OEBB with narrow-gage-rails - read more about it under "Transportation" For all fans of the good old times I may highly recommend to visit the trainstation of Mariazell with the special charmes of the 50s. It is a pity that only a few local people and a few train-enthousiasts use that train, and quite often it was almost given up already and saved by some local politicians in the very last moment. Only when the large streams of pilgrims arrive in Mariazell at special dates (like the visit of the pope) the train is fully booked again and even the station gets alive for a few days... Leave a Comment Directions: The train-station of Mariazell is just about 500 meters from the Basilika. Take Wienerstrasse in order to get there.

Magna Mater Austriae / Holy Mother of Austria is the name of the miracle-working sculpture on the main altar, standing in the middle of the Basilica , surrounded by precious sculptures and decorations of pure silver and gold. Karl von Habsburg - desendant from the last austrian emperor - married Francesca von Thyssen-Bornemisza in front of this sculpture, his parents Otto and Regina von Habsburg celebrated their golden wedding there.... ....and even the Austrian governement made a pilgrimage to that sculpture, after the rest of the EU had lifted the "Sanctions" against Austria in 2002. Leave a Comment Directions: Magna Mater Austriae / Holy Mother of Austria - you may see this sculpture at the main-altar in the very centre of the basilika.

Most of the tourists in Mariazell get there, because the basilica is the most important pilgrim-church in Austria and it even has some historic importance for the catholics in Hungary and Slovenia. The first church of Mariazell dates back to the year 1157. The Basilica was built by King Ludwig of Hungary after the victory against the Turques and therefor Ludwig donated a precious work of art, called "Magna Domina Hungarorum" - it may still be seen in the treasury today. The treasury is open from may 1st - october 26th Tuesday-saturday 10.00 a.m. - 03.00 p.m. sundays and holidays : 11.00 a.m. - 03.00 p.m. Leave a Comment Directions: Mariazell is about 70 km south of St.Pölten or halfway between Vienna and Graz, but shifted westwards a bit. Driving from Vienna needs about 1,5 hours
