Schladming Things to Do

  • Glacier Walking

When staying in the Schladming area, don't miss a visit to the Dachstein glacier. The gondola ride up to the glacier is spectacular and not for the feint hearted. Once up there you can either walk, ski (even in summer) or take a guided glacier tour. Another attraction is the glass floor viewing platform (sky walk) which looks down the cliff. The...

  • Hochwurzen Gondola

Hochwurzen gondola is situated in nearby Rohrmoos. The toll road up here is only open outside of the gondola operating hours. Up here you can take a guided go-kart ride downhill for fun. Another panoramaweg circumnavigates the top for lovely alpine views. Also start of longer hikes - e.g. ridge path to Ursprungalm. We intended to do this but there...

  • Planai Gondola

The Planai gondola enables easy climbing to altitude of 1830m. At the top there are cosy huts serving refreshments. The start of mountain bike downhill trails - it ws great fun watching them as we glided up in the gondola. There are adventure parks for kids and of course severail waling trails. An easy panoramaweg circles the top, plus a shorrt...

  • Hauser Kaibling Gondola

Haus im Ennstal is a very pretty village just a few kilometres down the road from Schladming. The 8 seater gondola station is towards the back of the village (not where the post bus goes!) Bit of a steep hill to climb but on the way I just stopped to enjoy the historic building and church. Lovely views at top and again many hikes can be taken from...

  • Obertal Valley

The day after the rain there was a dusting of snow on the mountain peaks and the air was crisp and fresh. We took the hiking bus down the Obertal valley and climbed up the forest track to the Duisitzkarsee Hut at 1,680 metres. Bit of a slog up the track, and the very last part is very steep but once there by the lake the views are stunning and the...

  • Giglachsee

It takes about an hour's climb from Ursprungalm to reach the Giglachsee and its hut. This was originally our first idea to walk up here and meander around the lake and back down to the alm. However the scenery was so beautiful and the weather so clear we decided to follow another path to the Ignaz-Mattis lodge, an old mining area and finally a long...

  • Ursprungalm

Ursprungalm lies at an altitude of 1610m at the foot of Styrian Kalkspitze. We arrived here with the hiking bus - an amazing journey itself as it follows the river along the valley floor and then loops up in never ending switchbacks to the alm - most interesting when a herd of long haired cattle were being shepherded down the same narrow road!The...

  • Scladming Brewery

Adjacent to the roundabout near the bus station is Schladming's Brewery - brewers since 1909Tours are available here from Mid June to Mid Sept every Thursday at 2.00pm. Tours last 90 mins.We didn't have time for this but entrance is 6 euros and includes opportunity to sample the beer and snacks plus a souvenir. I did get to sample the beer at many...

  • Wilde Wasser - Alpine Trail to...

The roundabout near the bus station in Scladming has an arty water fountain - Wilde Wasser - which looked great lit up at night by the way. This denoted the most popular themed water trail in the Schladming area. You can walk along the Untertal Valley from the beginning or take the hiking bus to where the alpine trail Wild water opens up the Riesach...

Schladming Transportation

  • Taxi Maxi Service

If you fancy a change from all the sport activities on offer in Schladming then try a trip with Taxi Maxi. I say trip but they don't do guided tours as such, more of a shared mini-bus taxi service - very friendly and helpful too. We took the round Dachstein tour. There were 6 of us in the mini-bus going to Hallstatt. We were dropped off at the...

  • Leave the car at home

Leave the car at home and use the wonderful Planai hiking buses around Schladming and Ramsau.Buses leave from Schladming centre to Obertal and Unteral Valleys - the starts of many varied hikes. A local bus goes to Ramsau, right up the toll road to the base gondola station for the Dachstein Glacier, plus an express bus leaves from Planai cable-car...

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Yes even in Schladming in the the middle of Austria there was beach volley tournaments going on - for the fist 2 days of our stay. It really was a strange sight to see sand and net courts set up on a parking lot in front of the Sporthotel Royer (also has 3 bowling alleys). With the surrounding mountain scenery is was quite surreal!

Schladming Favorites

  • Old Walls

Just round the corner from our hotel on the way to the central bus station, the remains of the old walls can be seen - just near the Catholic church with its typical Austrian dome shaped tower.

  • Schladming

Schladming is a former silver mining town but now well known in the sporting calendar for ski-ing, mountain biking and downhill golf. It has a pedestrianised centre with good selection of shops and cafes. They even have their own local brewery - Scladminger beer and a Schnaps distillery. The Plania cable-car is just a few minutes walk from the...

  • Rathaus

Schladming has a beautiful town hall - well actually is more of a castle, being built in 1884 by Prince August of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha. It was originally a hunting Châteaux.
