    Graz Things to Do

The Schlossberg is a mountain in the centre of Graz. An old legend tells how Graz originally had only a small hill known as Schöckl. The people of Graz made a pact with the devil telling him that if he made their mountain higher, they would give him the soul of the first person to climb up there. The devil agreed. He went to Africa and broke off...

  • Mur River

    Graz Things to Do

Graz has a mixture of very old and ultra-modern sights. The alien looking art gallery on the Mur Insel is one of the ultra-modern ones. The Mur Insel is an artificial island on the Mur River. It is made of metal and glass. There is a cafe inside. Although it is called an island it is more like a ship as it floats, has an anchor and is held in...

    Graz Things to Do

This has to be one of my favourite art exhibitions in Europe - it's worth a visit to Graz on its own. A combination of shocking architecture, and fascinatingly different artwork on display inside, makes for great entertainment. The building, designed by British architects Peter Cooke and Colin Fournier, is amazing. Dubbed "the friendly alien" its...

    Graz Things to Do

Graz's Hauptplatz is a wonderful square where you can find Graz's town hall, a bustling market and a lovely fountain. There are many ornate buildings next to the square. Graz Town Hall was originally built in 1550. The original building was quite simple and also acted as a prison. This building was replaced in 1803 by a newer and larger building...

  • Landhaus

    Graz Things to Do

Graz's historic landhaus is located on Herrengasse not far from the town hall. Before the landhaus was built leaders from different parts of Styria used to meet in various castles and monasteries, but they wanted a more permanent venue. In 1557 the Italian architect Domenico dell’Allio started to build the landhaus for this purpose. Even now this...

    Graz Things to Do

An hours spent enjoying the castle grounds on a beautiful Autumnal day. There are museums and galleries inside but time was limited and outside was fantastic! Visited the planet garden and spotted more peacocks than I've ever seen at one time before I think! Lovely place to visit, entrance to gardens (Oct 2010) just 1 Euro.

    Graz Things to Do

Graz Cathedral is also called St. Giles' Cathedral. It was built in 1462 by Friederick III on the site of an earlier Church of St Giles. In 1564 it was made into the court church, and in 1786 the seat of the local Bishops. It is a lovely, peaceful building to visit. Next to the cathedral is the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II.

The Burg is just across the road from the cathedral. This building dates from the fifteenth century. The Burg was the official headquarters of the regional government. Graz Things to Do

In 1884 Gottfried Maurer, a wine merchant, bought a house in Fliegenplatzl Square and decided to have a carillon installed there, because he had enjoyed visiting these on his travels through Belgium and Germany. The carillion played for the first time on Christmas Eve 1905. In 1929 Gottfried Maurer bequeathed the carillon to the city of Graz, on...

    Graz Things to Do

Right on the eastern edge of the city center is the enormous green expanse of the city park (Stadtpark). When I was there it was actually an enormous white expanse, with snow so deep it went up past my knee in parts, and I'm a long legged 6'2" (1.87m) tall. It was deep. And snowy. It looked great, though, especially on a Sunday winter's day, and...

  • Marienlift

    Graz Things to Do

This is one of the remains of Graz being European capital of culture 2003. A glass lift going to nowhere, just up in the air. The fare costs 1 EUR. You are going up and the lift stops for 1 minute so that you can enjoy the view over the Herrengasse. The idea of it`s designer was to take humble human beings to the same height as the Mary`s column...

    Graz Things to Do

The old core of Graz, with its architecture, look alike more to the northern Italian cities rather then central European city. I have found here alots of simmilarities with Bolzano or Belluno even with Verona. Luegghaus is one of the most attractive building in whole of Graz, it is situated at the corner of the Main Square and Sporgasse. In fact,...

The present day town hall was completed in 1893 and was designed by Wielemans and Reuter of Vienna. this building replaced an earlier town hall dating from 1803. • Mausoleum

    Graz Things to Do

Putting the lacklustre Cathedral to shame is the neighbouring Mausoleum, built in 1614 for the Archduke Ferdinand. Its multiple domed roof and graceful geometric lines produce a very pleasing look. I always find that a great piece of architecture is one that makes life easy for the viewer. If I can take many pictures from different angles and have...

There are some lovely painted houses on Herrengasse. These buildings were painted for the first time at the beginning of the seventeenth century. At that time the houses were used by the Habsburgs for carrying out their official business. From the year 1600 onwards, a brother of the future emperor Ferdinand II lived in one of these houses. He had...
