    Graz Things to Do

The Schlossberg is a mountain in the centre of Graz. An old legend tells how Graz originally had only a small hill known as Schöckl. The people of Graz made a pact with the devil telling him that if he made their mountain higher, they would give him the soul of the first person to climb up there. The devil agreed. He went to Africa and broke off...

When I arrived at Herberstein I unfortunately had only 2 hours, so I had to decide between art and history- meaning the guided castle tour and the Gironcoli museum on one hand or the animal park on the other. So I went for the animals and loved it! They have all kind of eurasian, american, australian and african animals which are kept quite appropriate to the species. The area is quite big, and with a lot of forest and trees as well, so the animals are not pent-up in little boxes. Most interesting are of course the cheetahs and the lions, but they also have lynxes, emus, kangaroos, cute little monkeys (some babies too), vervet monkeys and a lot more. Childish me was also very attracted to the children`s zoo (Streichelzoo) with it`s little bunnies and baby goats- you can touch them, they don`t bite :). I also liked the Mangalica pig right after the entrance, which likes to be caressed as well :). There is a little train going through the park down to the castle (the fare is 1 EUR). A regular ticket for the castle area costs EUR 13. The surroundings of Herberstein are lovely too, you can enjoy a pleasant landscape, a lot of wine cellars which offer food and drinks and the close by lake (Stubenbergsee). The Wildpark usually has a winter break from November till March.
