Alpbach Things to Do

  • Reither Badesee (swimming lake in Reith)

While Alpbach itself has an indoor swimming pool, its neighbour town Reith has a swimming lake. It’s not large but nice and warm, with a separated swimming area for children and one for toddlers. It has a gravel ground, at least where you walk in, which is very agreable. There’s a spring board and a swimming platform in the middle of the...

  • Marienweg & Höslkapelle

At the Hösljoch, a pass between the Alpbach valley and the Wildschönau valley, there’s a nice small chapel, obviously dedicated to Saint Mary. When you walk there from Alpbach using the street, you will automatically reach the Marienweg (Saint Mary road) which leads to the chapel, with several paintings and a scuplture of Saint Mary.

  • Höhenweg (high route) to Inneralpbach

There are two high routes from Alpbach to its neighbour village Inneralpbach - the upper one ("Oberer Höhenweg") and the middle one (Mittlerer Höhenweg"). We took the middle one and had nice views back to Alpbach and the Wiedersbergerhorn mountain on the other side of the valley, and of course the other mountains around. It’s a a paved road, with...

The church of Alpbach is a small baroque church with the altars being constructed by native artists of Alpbach, the Bletzacher family. The first church was build 1200 as an even smaller church who was extended multiple times until it got its current apperance in the 18th century. The patron saint of the church is St Oswald (604-642), King of...

  • Gratlspitz

The Gratlspitz is the mountain where Alpbach lies on, separating the Wildschönau valley and the Alpbachtal valley. Its main summit is 1899m above sea level, and there are also two subpeaks.Several hiking paths lead up to the summit. We however did hike around the Gratlspitz instead. This did mean to first walk up a hight difference of around 500m...

  • Wiedersberger Horn

The Wiedersberger Horn is the mountain that you see from everywhere in Alpbach as it’s on the opposite side of the Alpbachtal valley. Its summit is 2127m above sea level. There’s a gondola lift from the Alpbach valley up to the Wiedersberger Horn. The mountain station of that gondola lift is at about 1850m. Alpbach Restaurants

  • Don't take a pizza...

The restaurant Postalm is located next to the Hotel Post, it’s on the left when coming up the main street from the valley. We both had a pizza which was bad idea as they were really flavourless, one of the worst pizzas I’ve eaten. They have other dishes also, maybe they are better with schnitzel and this stuff. We also had to wait longer than in...

  • Not only good pizzas!

The Gasthof Messner’s (or Messnerwirt) offers pizzas as well as local food. We sat outside on the terrace and had a Pizza Diavolo and Mixed Grill which both was delicious. The same family also owns the Gasthof Jakober which is above the Messnerwirt; it seems they have the same menu. We had a good sundae in the Gasthof Jakober, on their nice...

  • Good restaurant

The restaurant of the hotel Post was one that we got recommended by the locals and it really was good. We enjoyed our Cordon bleu and the Lasagne there. They serve mainly local food and have lunchtime specials that seems to be rather cheap. The Lasagne was a such and is not on their normal menu. The restaurant is located to the left when coming up...

Alpbach Transportation

  • The "Postbus"

I always find it very convenient to combine a hiking tour with a bus ride and with the Alpbachtal Seenland Card, you even can use the bus fro free. Just show the Card when you enter the the bus. There two bus stations in Alpbach, both in the centre not far from each other, called “Raika” (opposite of the bank “Raiffeisenkasse” and “Böglerhof” (a...

  • Gondola lifts

There are two gondola lifts in that region, one in Alpbach and one in Reith, the neighbour town. Plus one in Kramsach, the Sonnwendjochbahn, a chair lift for one person each. And in winter, there are additional ski lifts. The gondola lift in Alpbach goes up to the Wiedersberger Horn and is for 6 persons, the one in Reith goes up to the Reither Kogel...

  • Get a hiking map!

As Alpbach is a perfect place for hiking, I recommend you buy a hiking map. You can get it in the tourist information for 3,50 €. It’s on a scale of 1:30000, with some hiking recommendations (in German and English), and covers the whole region with the Alpbachtal valley, parts of the Ziller valley and the mountains north of the Inn valley. I found...

  • Alpbachtal Seenland Card

When you stay in one of the villages in this area, you will get the “Alpbachtal Seenland Card”. With this, you can use quite a lot of things free of charge. Okay, you pay a visitor’s tax of 2 € per day and person, but especially the gondola lifts are expensive, so I really like this Card! In summer, the Card includes for example:-...
