Ellmau the little village where I felt at home

Favorite thing: It was easy for me to feel completely at home in the little village of Ellmau its population numbers only 2,600 but has nearly 5,000 guest beds. Despite the number of guests (I like the use of this word rather than tourist ha ha) it never appeared busy but quiet and laid back. The locals always recognised us and greeted us in the streets with Guten tag or more usually grub gott. Even the cars moved slowly here no one was every in a hurry and everyone was pleased to help if you needed any. Ellmau is a very pretty village situated in a stunning location in the Going Valley 820 meters above sea level nestled between the Wilderkaiser and Hartkaiser the foothills of the Kitzbheler.

Fondest memory: In the village I liked best of all sitting by the water fountain in the little square - here there was always someone to chat too. Mornings were especially memorable - it was here we met many locals returning from some morning shopping, taking a break in the shade and passing the time of day - it reminded me a lot of home even though I live at sea level I could get used to the mountains. Ellmau I already miss you.

    Wilder Kaiser ad Ellmau

Favorite thing: Ellmau is an idyllic alpine village in the Tirol region of Austria. It lies at the foot of the impressive Wilder Kaiser mountain range - the "mighty emperor". The Kaiser consists basically of two chains, oriented in west - east direction. The southern chain is called the Wilder (wild) Kaiser, the northern chain is called the Zahmer (tame) Kaiser. These attributes characterize aptly the two chains.

    Wilder Kaiser

Favorite thing: My favourite memory was the view of these peaks as we hiked on the Wilder Kaiser side of Ellmau. Their limestone cragginess remonded me of the italain dolomites - another favourite hiking region of mine.

    mountain gazers

Fondest memory: Just to stand and gaze at the awesome beauty of the mountains. This is a view of the Wilder Kaiser from the Hartkaiser side taken from the top of the Brandstadl gondola station which is situated between Ellmau and Scheffau - the next village along the valley.
